Yesterday we began the day by packing up after enjoing our log cabin in Keystone for the last 4 days. We then spent almost 8 hours in the car heading for Cody, WY. Thank you Becca & Bob Price for telling us about this place. On the way to Cody, we passed through the Bighorn National Forest. Some more beautiful country. Parts of the forest still had some snow on the ground. I coudn't find anyone in our car (Kay) that wanted to indulge in a snowball fight. Maybe next time! More tomorrow.... read more

Yesterday we began the day with a 5 mile walk on the Mickleson trail before breakfast. This trail is on an old abandoned railway (minus the rails & ties). Again, beautiful scenery & designed with a gentle slop for the old iron horse which works out well for today’s old horse! We then headed out for the Wall Drug Store established in the 1930’s by the Hustead family. In the beginning, times were slow & cars were zooming past headed for Rapid City. The family came up with the idea of giving away free ice water & advertised same on roadside signs (the signs today are literally all over the world. It was a huge success & the store now covers an entire city block in Wall, SD. You have to see it to believe it! ... read more

Yesterday looked like a great day for a train trip so we drove to Hill City to get on the Black Hills Central Railroad (1880 Train). More beautiful scenery & a great way to travel! What train trip would be complete with out stopping at the local Christmas store. I think the store is going to have to reorder after Kay finished shopping. I may have to ride on the hood on the way home to accomodate the packages. We capped off the day with an evening ceremony at Mount Rushmore. A video was shown commemorating the four presidents that concluded with a flag ceremony. All servicemen & women present (active duty & retired) were recognized & invited down to the stage to participate. This was another high watermark for this trip. More tomorrow.... read more

What a day! I have been so looking forward to seeing this place & was not disappointed. We took the audio tour & I highly recommend it. I can't send you the audio so we took lots of pictures so enjoy. Traveled next to Custer State Park. On the way to the park we saw a pigtail bridge. Heard about them but had never seen one. At CSP we got some wonderful shots of turkey & bison. Lots of beautiful scenery! On the way out of the park we saw Cathedral Spires. We took a break at our cabin before heading to the Crazy Horse Memorial. While sitting at the table outside our cabin, 3 wild turkeys dropped by like they owned the place (Maybe they did?). After spending time at the Crazy Horse visitor center, ... read more

Before leaving Deadwood yesterday, we stopped to see one more Kevin Costner attraction. Costner created an amazing museum as a memorial to the Bison entitled the Story of the Bison complete with bronze sculptures. We then travelled to our home for the next 4 days, Holy Smoke Resort in Keystone, SD. After checking in, we headed to see the Rushmore Borglum Story Museum. A fantastic collection of items that tell the story of Gutzon Borglum's life. A little know fact is that Borglum spent several years in San Antonio in the 1920's and at least one of his sculptures still exists there close to the Witte Museum. His studio was in the Mill Race building in Brackenridge Park next to the golf clubhouse. BTW, that very building was restored by Joe Stubblefield & Richard Mogas in ... read more

After a 6 mile walk, we ate breakfast & headed to the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs. An amazing find of creatures from long ago that fell in a sink hole & were preserved for future generations. Had a great lunch at "All Stars Grill & Pub" (not quite like the one in SA I'm told. This one is more of a family place.) We then headed to Deadwood by way of Rapid City. To make the most of the day, we listened to the sound track from Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest. If you have never seen it, you are missing a great movie. Had a great dinner at Kevin Costner's Jakes in Deadwood. After contributing 6 bucks to the hotel's slot machines, spent the night at the Historic Bullock Hotel. More tomorrow!... read more

Began the day with our morning call from Larry. We were slow getting on the road & received appropriate encouragement from him to start earlier today. We were in 4 states yesterday. Whew! It is amazing how the geography can change so much within a state! Really beautiful country. Had dinner at the Branding Iron. No pie this time. Too many car snacks & not enough Tums! We are now in South Dakota & really excited about the sight seeing to come! More tomorrow.... read more

We got a fairly early start from Shamrock yesterday morning. In short order, we were in Oklahoma. We really went through Oklahoma fast as we obviously were just passing through the panhandle. We then arrived in Kansas. Wow, I've never seen so many "amber waves of grain"! We took a break in Garden City, KS & changed drivers. With Kay behind the wheel, we left town. At the edge of town, we passed a building with a great sign, "Stay Slim, Eat Beef." I asked Kay to turn the car around so I could take a picture. She said no way was she going to waste time so that I could take a picture of such a bogus sign. And by the way she asked, how's that eating beef & staying slim working out for you? ... read more

We walked out the front door of the house at 8:00 a.m. yesterday as planned. When Larry Armstrong called me mid-morning on my cell phone, he couldn't believe we had already passed Brady, TX. We travelled all day & arrived in Shamrock, TX late yesterday afternoon (& we were still talking to each other.) After a short nap (road trips are hard work you know) we went for a 3 mile training walk in preparation for our next 1/2 marathon in Chicago on 8/1. (Dolores, I know it was supposed to be 4 miles but we ran out of gas.) We had dinner last night at Big Vern's Steak House. It is on old Route 66! Good food & a good time! Across the street from Big Vern's was an old service station that was used ... read more

We had a long day yesterday. Woke up at 4:00 a.m. & left for the Fairbanks airport at 4:30. Got to Seattle where our connecting flight to Salt Lake City was delayed over an hour. Finally got to SLC & had to jog to the gate to get there in time before they closed the plane door. Got home at 9:30 last night. But you know what? It was an amazing trip. We have just spent a wonderful 2 weeks with our guys that none of us will soon forget. I hope you have enjoyed our blog. We have had fun preparing it & I suspect that some of the events will find their way into the 2010 Gerfers Gazette! A special thank you to Jodie Wurzbach, our travel agent for helping us plan & book ... read more
