Today we went on three home visits through Donkeaw Health Center. The first home we went to was of a lady in her early 60s. She had been in a car accident about 20 years ago and was pulled out of her care without precaution. She had a spinal injury which lead to paralysis due to mishandling during rescue. She lived at her son’s house, who worked during the day, as well as with her home helper from Myanmar, who had been working with her for 17 years. I was amazed by this length of time. At my home, we can barely get someone to stay 3 months with my younger sisters. It is also so amazing to me that the community helps the disabled out. During transfers, different people from the community volunteer to help ... read more

Today we visited two locations: Donkeaw Health Center and the Bagkok-Chiang Mai Hospital. The morning went so well, and I could have cried by the beauty of all I was seeing and experiencing. The community center was ranked number one for community hospitals in Thailand for good reason. They showed us a movie clip about their hospital and offered facts about all they do. It was unbelievable how they got to where they are now. First they took the risk of shifting from ministry of public health to ministry of internal services in hopes of getting more money in the long run even though they could not be promised dependable and stable financial income. They also went from house to house in the district to survey what each household’s conditions were such as disabled and bedridden ... read more

I no longer can complain about waking up at 9am on Saturday mornings at school anymore since I had to get up at 630am this weekend. Fortunately we do have a bit of a break this evening since we were all beginning to feel the business of the weekend as it was coming to a close. Saturday morning we went to a Thai cooking class. It was fun to learn how to cook with ingredients much different than we use in America, and it gave me a better appreciation for Thai food in general. There were so many steps, yet it seems like many of my friends here know how to prepare the meals. I definitely want to get better at blending species, and I especially appreciate their ability to not waste anything they use. I ... read more

Today we started out our day on our units at the hospital. It was kind of crazy how different the unit was since Professor Debbie was with me this time. They seemed afraid to work in front of her and therefore pretty much had her precept me instead of another Thai nurse, as I had done previously in the week. Instead of doing more tasks, we spent a lot more time talking. The nurses and physicians explained different patient cases and care plans to Debbie, so I listened alongside here. Fortunately, I was able to squeeze in blood work (no butterfly needle!), NG tube insertion which came out her mouth the first time ahhh, wound dressing care, and catheter observation since the sterile field is a little different than what I am used to. Debbie was ... read more

Once again this journal entry is going to be a little short. I wish that I had a tape recorder to carry around with me to capture all the things I’m processing, since I’m an external processor. I usually think I’m exhausted by the end of the day in the United States, but I haven’t felt this tired in a while. Every day we come back ready to hit the bed, so doing our work has been a bit of a challenge. My heart goes out to our Thai buddies as they usually stay up even later than us! This morning we went to the hospital, we observed in hemodialysis for a bit. Most of what they had to say was similar to the United States, but it was interesting that they needed to use peritoneal ... read more

Well Tomorrow morning will be about one week since we left D.C. but it feels like I have been here much longer. 1: Because I already feel so close to my bodies. 2: Because our days are so packed I feel absolutely exhausted. I woke up with horrible allergies today which is such a bummer because I love Thailand, but I’m not sure I would ever be able to live here for a long period of time because well I seem to be allergic to everything! My nose is twice the size. I feel drowsy without medication. My eyes are burning and itching non-stop. I hope that the air-conditioning in our room (which we finally figured out the right setting) will help and maybe some Benedryll. Fortunately, I was given the opportunity to be in the ... read more

I think I’m going to actually sleep well on the airplane on the way home. I’m exhausted! We started off today with morning ceremony, but quickly traveled over the hospital. My day was better than expected other than my bodies reaction to drinking to much condensed milk in my morning chocolate coffee (which my preceptor kindly bought for us). The trauma ward was pretty much what I had anticipated after our tour yesterday. All of the patients we saw had head injuries, a result of motorcycle accidents. The neuro surgeon spent about 20 minutes showing us the CT scans of a few patients, stating the cause and results. He explained that many patients were in from new years eve/day because they had been riding a motorcycle drunk after a long night of partying. I was able ... read more

Well, it’s 10:51pm now. I meant to get some great journaling in today since we had more free time, but I ended up talking to “Ajon" Debbie and one of my roommates, Mary, instead. I’m definitely an external processor, so though it was extremely helpful, it didn't help me get my journaling completed. I finally started to process all the thoughts running through my head from this past weekend. Though we spent a lot of our day touring and orienting to Nakornping Hospital, I really spent most of my time thinking about the values and spirituality that lays at the core of this culture as well as my personal believes in relationship to these. For example, I started thinking about the values that lie at the foundation of Buddhism. I am almost embarrassed to tell people ... read more

Wow what another crazy fun yet exhaustion day. I feel like these journal entries are going to be funny to go back over and read later on since I have been so tired when writing. To bounce back to this morning, I started off my day with fried chicken and rice, and may I dare to say it was the best fried chicken I have ever had? And to top it off there was authentic sweet and sour sauce to dip the chicken in. How could it get any better?! After breakfast we met up with our buddies and headed to Doi Sutep, a Buddhist temple. The road was windy and our buddies made us panic a little as they described the windy road to the top. Many of them had vomited from car sickness before. ... read more

Today was our first full day in Chiang Mai. Though we were still tired from our long hours of traveling, we managed to shimmy our way down to breakfast. As we walked to breakfast, extremely humid air flooded into my face. I was already feeling tired and a little week so this did not help my case. I forgot how much of a wimp I was when it came to humid weather. I tried to suck it up and keep moving. This was not going to ruin my hope for a great experience. We scooped up purple sticky rice and pork on a stick wrapped up in a leaf. I loved the presentation, despite being unsure of eating such hardy foods for breakfast. I just want to say the pork was amazing and by far the ... read more
