Had a pleasant stay in the hotel in Atibes. It was run by two brothers who spoke good English. They love dogs and had a young pup which liked to nibble our shoes as we ate breakfast. Obviously the girls gave more attention to the dog than their breakfast. Checked out and had a quick walk around the rocks of one of the points, near the 'bay of millionaires' but we couldn't get far because those rich folk had blocked off part of the shoreline. For the 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrel' fans, the scenes for Michael Caine's mansion were filmed here, but we couldn't get that far. Back to the autostrade. The roads are now a bit wider and better condition so started cruising at 130. You really don't notice it after a while - or more ... read more

Farewelled the Cinque Terra today. Location was great, accommodation good, breakfast very basic - we were spoilt in Rome and Siena! Headed up the coast and saw patches of snow. Surprising to see snow so close to the coast. The road along the Cinque Terra was very narrow but very picturesque. Finally joined the autostrade and then off we went. The road was very good but still narrow - so not ready for 130 kph yet. Passed some really interesting places but we decided to reach our destination ASAP - the daylight is short. Using the tom-tom has been great. Long drives for the kids but they coped well, and we have been listening to Roald Dahl stories on a CD set - that has been great. There is only so much Italian/French radio one can ... read more

Farewelled Henry and Mari at breakfast - lovely people. We pretty much repeated the first day (including a stop at the kids park again) except we visited the village Vernazza. Back in Riomaggoire we came across a huge mural showing fishing life with a goddess floating above. We all thought one of the characters looked like our neighbour Rob. What do you think Tracey? It was time for some laundry so I spent an hour or so at the local laundry-mat with one of the local cats on my lap. It helped. Then we had a repeated dinner in Riomaggoire at the same restaurant we visited when we arrived. Yes mum, I did wash my hands!!... read more

Woke to the bells of the local church - right next door. Was expecting seven rings (for 7 o'clock) but it just kept on going and slowly faded. Oh well - that will ensure we don't waste the day. We are staying in two separate rooms - only ones on the same floor, so me and one if the kids in one room, and Eileen and the other two in the other. Breakfast was in another building close by - very basic but did the job. Met a lovely couple during breakfast from Puerto Rico - Henry and Mari. They are in Italy for a conference (I think) and added a few days to sight-see. Henry is an accomplished violinist, plays in an orchestra and teaches, and Mari does promotional work in the same area (there's ... read more

After a great stay in Siena, we said goodbye to Gabriella and headed off to the Riomaggiore in the Cinque Terre. We travelled past Florence and headed first for Pisa. On the way there I must confess we stopped at a Mac Donalds. Now, now. This was a cross-cultural experience. We got to eat the Italian versions of the Macca meals. We also had an Italian version of a K-Mart next door where we grabbed some extra clothing (eg gloves). After a few missed Tom-Tom directions (on my part - with colourful language) and a longer than necessary tour of the city, we finally found the leaning tower of Pisa. It was raining again but that didn't stop us - after all, we have umbrellas now!! Katie was too young to climb the tower (we shouldn't ... read more

Today we drove to Florence (Firenze). It was raining when we arrived and the Tom Tom led us to an car park through very narrow streets and kids heard more 'language' from dad. Managed to find a cheaper spot not too far out of the centre and walked in. Came across some open markets - it was interesting seeing the various foods available. We actually bought some umbrellas - believe it or not. By the time we reached the main cathedral Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore the rain had stopped. We climbed the top of cathedral dome which required climbing up about 450 steps through narrow passage ways. The views were spectacular and I hope the photos give a hint of that. After travelling back down the same passages (and having some rather intimate moments ... read more

Went for a drive this day. Was the best thing as it rained a lot. A bit more challenging driving on country roads and I stalled a few times when having to take-off on an incline. The parking brake is a button, not a handle, which takes a bit of getting used to, especially when you want to move off quickly to get out of the way of impatient Italians (slowly learning not to care). First stop was a town called Voltarre. Eileen decided she and Daniel would go to a Museum of Torture, and that I should take the girls to a Etruscan Museum. Boy did we get draw the wrong straw. I can safely say that that was the most boring museum I have ever visited - and the girls whole heartedly agree. Sorry ... read more

Gabrielle, our host at Fonte dei Tufi BnB, has been wonderful. She speaks English well and has given us good local advice. It was raining in the morning so I drove Eileen and the girls up to village and then Daniel and I drove back down to the BnB to catch the bus. The rain had stopped so we had a good walk up. Walking the streets of Siena was magical. Most of the buildings are at least three stories high and the streets narrow and paved in stone. At the Piazza del Campo we climbed the bell tower of the Palazzo Pubblico (town hall) and had excellent views of the township and outer areas. Had a look around the museum next door and then had lunch (paninis all round). Kids had fun chasing and feeding ... read more

Today we left Rome. We had a great time staying at the BnB but it was sad for us all to say goodbye to Maia. The kids were very fond of her and Isabel particularly wanted to give Maria a gift. and each of the kids prepared a farewell/thankyou card. Maria also gave us a gift - an antique book on Rome. It was a great start to our holiday. La ringrazio molto Maria!! We travelled via shuttle bus to the car depot and found our new car - the Renault Grand Scenic. During the paper work it became apparent that the Tom-Tom only provided coverage for France - not all of Europe as we had arranged! The Eurolease guy explained the Australian paper-work never requested the full coverage and there was nothing he could do ... read more

The day started with a laugh. Maria had set-up an iron for us to use. She must of assumed Eileen was going to use it because when she walked in and found me using it, she laughed with surprise. "Italian men never do this!" So there's 1 for the Aussies. Arrived at St Peters to find a huge queue for the church, so walked around to the the museum where there was no queue at all - excellent. A lot of interested stuff but again a bit of information overload. I think we have have seen enough human statues, fig leaves, papal scenes and frescoes. It was actually interesting to see statues of animals! Of course, seeing the famous paintings was impressive, particularly the Sistine chapel. It really was so well done. Did get a sore ... read more
