Today we went to Battle to visit Battle Abbey (and Battlefield) where the Battle of Hastings occurred. Guess what happened there? There was a ... battle!! The presentations and audio guides were great. Have certainly been catching up on my European history. Weather has still been cold with lots of frozen ponds which the kids keep trying to break. Daniel found a dead and nearly frozen sheep in on of the ponds in the battlefield.... read more

Had a slow morning after a good nights sleep. Very comfortable cottage. Took the girls for a walk up the hill behind our cottage and found a great kids park. Then we all went to the Smuggler's Museum. Very impressive labyrinth but it wasn't clear whether it was really used by smugglers. Still worth the visit. Made our way down to the 'old' town. Walked along the coast, visited a fishing museum and wasted some money in an amusement park. I couldn't work out the Nudge machines, but the kids enjoyed the slot machines - a little too much. Now they want the play two-up all the time. Have had to put a limit on that. Dinner at a local tavern and then back to the cottage for a episode of Hornblower.... read more

Today was Eileen's birthday. I'm sure you all know here age so I won't repeat it here. No cup of tea in the morning unfortunately. Presents in the morning and then breakfast. Drove from Bruges to Calais to catch the Ferry. You drive the car through two customs, French and the UK right behind. The UK customs had trouble with the passports for the kids so the officer asked me for my occupation. When I told him I worked in I.T. he asked whether I forged them - then he smiled. A relaxing Ferry ride. Eileen did a bit of shopping and we all exchanged our Euros for Pounds. No commission on the ferry but the exchange rate was poor. Off the ferry and up to Dover castle. Drive on the left, drive on the left. ... read more

Our accommodation has been very good, with a good breakfast (meaning a good variety of cereals, breads, croissants, egg, fruit, tea/coffee and juices). Drove to Ypres (Ieper depending on the language). Hoped to see a WW1 museum but it was closed due to renovations. Walked around. Very nice and a lot cheaper than Bruges. Had a nice lunch (and an Irish coffee) and then drove to the Hill 60 site which quite famous WW1 location. A lot of falling snow today and the kids had a lot of fun throwing snow balls and rolling up big ones. A lot of sliding as well. Not much else to report. Tomorrow (5th) is Eileen's birthday and we catch a ferry from Calais to Dover. Ah - England at last. Hope they speak English - it will be a ... read more

Mainly looked around town. As we now have a thing for steps and towers, we climbed another bell tower. Got very narrow in places. Much to Isabel's relief the bells didn't go off on the hour. It was interesting to see the mechanics inside a huge clock with four faces. Shall I tell you how it works? ... nah! The big highlight was ice skating in one of the main squares. None of the kids had done it before and they did quite well. Of course Eileen had to show off her skating skill. I was just waiting for a fall, or one of those scenes from a Berenstein Bears book - but no - she did well and smiled a lot. Looked around the shops, particularly the chocolate shops, but more importantly anywhere we could ... read more

More snow overnight. Packed up and headed off around 11am. Had to wait for the owner to come back to do his inventory check before getting our 300 euro deposit back. While walking with luggage to the nearby car park, Daniel continued to keep his eye out for money. Just as he picked up a small coin, a local took pity on him and gave him a 2 euro coin. We're not sure if it was a joke or he thought Daniel was a beggar. We certainly weren't dressed as stylishly as the French. When trying to keep warm you tend to get as much on as you can. While having a laugh later and talking about it, I could see Daniel's mind ticking over the new possibilities . After a few wrong turns while trying ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris December 1st 2010

Today we used the Paris Metro (underground rail) system to visit the Montmartre district. The trains are very regular with a train every 3-4 minutes, and each one fairly busy. Met our guide at Abbesse station who took us around various locations of relevance to artists (like Van Gough), a martyr, movie celebrities, movie locations (like Amélie) and infamous burglars. We finished on top of a hill with the church - Basilique du Sacre Coeur. Normally a great view of Paris but ours was limited as it started snowing lightly. Still - we managed to fit in a merry-go-round ride. Headed back to the train station via the Moulin Rouge. Didn't think about this being a bit of a red-light district. Using every art of distraction we could think of, we made our way past a ... read more

Europe November 30th 2010

Ah - another morning with a good cup of tea! Today we went to the Musée d'Orsay, an alternative to the Louvre Museum. Kids were about 20% interested, adults a bit more so. Saw some great works of artsamongst the rest that we tended to zone out on. There's only so much of this one can handle. After all, I probably only visit a museum or art gallery in Australia once every 6 months at most. So we are learning to get to the highlights quickly and be prepared to skip a lot. A lunch break in the middle helped. Saying all that, it was great to see, face-to-face, original paintings by Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cezanne, Seurat, Gauguin and Van Gogh. A lot of my old high school art classes started coming back to me. ... read more

Ah - finally - a cup of tea in the morning!! Boy have I missed that. Apartment is very quiet and we all slept in. First order of the day was shopping. Eileen and the girls went for food, and Daniel and I went for a new camera. We were recommended FNAC for the camera. Quite an impressive shop for all electronic foods, but stayed focused and got the camera. We then met back at the apartment for a quick lunch. Walked to the Notre Dame to get on the tour bus. Patches of snow around and it was very cold. The bus is an open top. Eileen and the kids lasted about 15 minutes but I was determined to make the most of it. However, after about 30 minutes my hands and feet started to ... read more

Europe November 28th 2010

Back on the autrostrade. Along the way to Paris we encountered full snow cover (off the road). Stopped along the way and the kids were excited to have a full layer of snow to play with, and there was a light fall as well. Listening to more Roald Dahl - 'The Witches' - with passing fog and snow adding extra eerie effect. Driving through Paris was not too back, just had to keep an eye on the neighbouring cars and leave plenty of room for the motor bikes and bicycles. Accommodation is an apartment in Saint-Michel on the 5th floor, with no lift. The owners met us outside so I dropped family and luggage off (no parking available on a one-way street) and parked in a nearby parking station. When I finally got back everyone was ... read more
