Brno was the first of the three zoos that I visited as I was staying in the city centre of Brno itself (which is very nice, by the way) and I had the pleasure of being shown around the zoo by a local resident and fellow zoo enthusiast. Brno is a decent sized zoo, not huge by any means, but quite a nice general zoo with a fairly diverse collection ranging from mammals to fish. It's quite easy to see that the zoo has improved in recent years and continues to improve as there are a fair few old, out of date enclosures, such as some very old primate enclosures, as well as some very nice new enclosures such as the excellent Kamchatka Bear exhibit and the African area where there is further development going on ... read more

My last particularly significant day of this trip was a day trip to Rottnest Island. I had tried to persuade my parents to allow me to spend a night at Rottnest, however, a day trip was the most I would get, starting with an early morning ferry, and leaving on the last ferry of the day in the late afternoon. We chose to take a ferry from Fremantle, about forty-five minutes by car from where I was staying in Perth. I tried to drag my family out of the house as soon as possible to be sure to get there on time, but we ended up leaving with barely enough time and it would have been alright if it wasn’t for the fact that we got lost. We didn’t get lost as such in that we ... read more

I had one further zoo left to visit while I was in Australia which was Peel Zoo. Peel Zoo is located not too much over an hour’s drive to the south of Perth in the small town of Pinjarra, the nearest big city to which is Mandurah about twenty minutes away by car. On the drive down to Peel, it is worth noting that I saw a wild Wedge-tailed Eagle from the car flying overhead, which was, somewhat surprisingly, my first wild Wedge-tailed Eagle for the trip. Though Peel isn’t a huge zoo, I wanted to visit from Perth because I had heard it was quite a nice zoo with some interesting species there. The zoo is in quite a nice setting in an area of parkland by the Murray River (not the big one in ... read more

The next day, I did another fairly significant bit of birding, which was a visit to Yanchep National Park, an hour and a bit north of Perth. The main purpose of this day trip wasn’t actually for birding, but we were going there anyway to celebrate my grandmother’s birthday in the nice restaurant at Yanchep that overlooks the lake, but I got lots of birding in anyway. There were a few species that I was particularly looking for at Yanchep, including things like White-winged Fairy-wren, Southern Emu-wren, Purple-crowned Lorikeet, Elegant Parrot, and things like that. I didn’t actually see any of those four species though, and I think that would largely be because we were at the national park at a fairly poor time for birding (got there after the morning, and left before the evening) ... read more

After several zoos visited over the last two weeks, I then had a half day trip to an area near Perth called Wungong Gorge/Reservoir/Dam (and also Bungendore Park) in the Araluen-Wungong Important Bird Area. This won’t be a particularly long post, as it was only a short trip, but I thought there was enough to make it worth posting. I had read about the area on the internet and in the Finding Australian Birds book, and it seemed to have quite a few bird species that I was interested in seeing and seemed to be one of the better places near Perth for South Western Australian endemic birds. Coincidentally, it is also quite near both the Cohunu Koala Park and the Armadale Reptile and Wildlife Centre. I wanted to head out early to get there not ... read more

Just down the road from the Armadale Reptile and Wildlife Centre is another small zoo, the Cohunu Koala Park. This is a very strange zoo and different to all of the other zoos that I have written about in this thread in that I thought it was terrible and it's really not worth visiting unless you want to see its weirdness in person or have a spare $15 dollars that you need to get rid of. The zoo has quite a large car park and from the car park you go through a gate in a fence which I assume is to keep the free-roaming animals from going onto the road. From here there is then quite a large area of empty land with nothing in it – not even plants – except the track for ... read more

The next zoo that I visited is a much smaller place called the Armadale Reptile and Wildlife Centre (formerly just the Armadale Reptile Centre) which is in the City of Armadale, south east of Perth. It is actually located very near to the next two places I will be writing about in this thread, the Cohunu Koala Park, and Wungong Dam (a birding site) and the three could very easily be done together if you wanted to (though I did them on three separate trips because they aren’t too far from where I stayed in Perth). The Reptile and Wildlife Centre is a very small place with mostly very cheaply built enclosures. As well as being a zoo open to visitors, it also functions as a rescue and rehabilitation centre for native wildlife. As far as ... read more

The next zoo that I visited was AQWA, the Aquarium of Western Australia which is located in Hillarys Boat Harbour in the town/suburb of Hillarys which is quite a way north of Perth. It's not a huge aquarium, but has a wide range of species and exhibits from across Western Australia. From the outside the aquarium was quite a large building located right on the coastline. Just inside the entrance to the aquarium is a row of five small tanks, each representing the one of the different geographical sections that the aquarium is divided into, with each representing a different part of the Western Australian coastline separated by latitude. These different sections are the Perth Coast, Shipwreck Coast, Great Southern Coast, Far North Coast, and Coral Coast. The aquarium also has two sections that are not ... read more

The next zoo that I visited after Caversham was two days later when I visited Perth Zoo. At Perth Zoo there were a couple of things that I particularly wanted to see that I knew were not guaranteed sightings because they were often hiding. These were species in the nocturnal house, the Dampier Peninsula Monitor, and the Numbats, and as a result I ended up doing the zoo in a bit of a weird order starting with the nocturnal house which is at the other side of the zoo. So I got to the zoo at about quarter to ten (the zoo opens at nine) because I wasn’t actually staying in the city itself but in the Perth Hills a little way away. I started by heading straight to the nocturnal house because I wanted to ... read more

Caversham Wildlife Park is quite a large zoo located a bit of a way North-east of Perth but still within the Perth suburbs. The zoo almost exclusively holds Australian native animals, and has a rather impressive species list with not too far below 200 species. I was particularly impressed at the diversity of native bird species held. The zoo is located within Whiteman Park which is a large recreational park with lots of bushland and lots of wild Western Grey Kangaroos which can be seen easily on the drive up to the zoo. I believe there are lots of birding opportunities in the park as well, but I didn’t actually have time to spend birding because the zoo does take quite a few hours to see thoroughly and is a bit of a drive from Perth. ... read more
