After recently getting married, we are off on a big adventure. We are from Australia, we love surfing, chasing the sun and a few coldies. We hope you enjoy the good times with us.
We left you just before we went into silence over a month ago. We finally have some time to update you on what has been happening. The retreat was a life changing experience for both of us. The five days of silence was successful. It is interesting when you don't talk to your partner for 5 days and simply observe their behaviour. We had a cricket invasion in our cabin, which would begin every night as Brendan hopped in to bed, I must admit I let out a few giggles as I watched him try to enforce the rule of silence on to the jungle crickets of Guatemala. His agility was amazing , all that yoga must have paid off! We were enjoying our time so much that we extended our stay. Brendan went on to ... read more
We arrived in Tapuchula very early in the morning and once again very weary. We stepped off the bus, to bus companies shouting at us in Spanish, tring to get us on their bus. All we could communicate with them was Antigua. So we boarded a bus and headed to Antigua (WE THOUGHT!!) After having several conversations or I should say trying to!! We discovered that we were actually heading to Guatemala City. We were a bit bummed but thought we would just change our schedule slightly. The bus driver and stewardess had other ideas. They called us up the front and in very broken english and our poor spanish, we came to the conclusion that they were going to drop off us on the highway and we would have to get a famous chicken ... read more
After cruising inside a mobile fridge for 14 hours (we suggest anyone travelling in overnight buses to rug up!!) We arrived in Puerto Escondido very tired and disorientated. Upon our arrival we met Horehare(not sure of the spelling). He was dropping a friend off at the station and he asked us if we needed any accommodation. After sussing him out for a few minutes we decided to go with him. This decision turned out to be very good one. We rented a villa off him at a ridiculously cheap price and he was such a friendly and helpful guy. Our stay in Puerto Escondido was packed with great experiences. Good food, good people and great waves. This place does turn into pipleine on sand. The ding repair shop was constantly busy. Luckily they didn't get ... read more
Our second attempt out of Los Angeles was successful as we finally boarded our plane enroute to Mexico City. We arrived in Mexico City and once again cruised through immigration and managed to get ourselves a cab to our hostel with our very poco spanish. This cab ride was a very fast introduction to how loco Mex City really is. The markets were on the street our hostel was on so the cab driver couldn not drive us in. He just dropped off and pointed, so we presumed we had to walk in that direction. Luckily we didn't have far to go. With 4 surfboards and 4 backpacks you don't want to walk far! We settled into our hostel which was right in the centre(thank goodness for ear plugs)These Mexicans can really make a noise. and ... read more
Who said the United States had tightened up their security. They let us in!!!! After a fairly good flight, we cruised through immigration and we were on our way to Ocean Beach. We stayed at Ocean Beach Backpackers for 2 weeks. Most of the crew were quite a bit younger and partied quite a bit so we only felt it was our duty to join in and show them how it is done!! It didn't take long for us to find out that the pub down the road had beers starting at $1.00 from 10am in the morning, and then went up 25 cents every hour after that. They also had the best fish tacos ever!!!! The weather wasn't so good. It was May Grey. The surf was very average and the water so cold, ... read more
After our honeymoon we headed south east to Teahupoo to catch some of the Billabong Pro. The contest was put off for a few days due to lack of swell. We thought we would seize the opportunity to do some exploring and find the waterfall that our hosts told us about. 15 minutes into the hike we had to turn tail and run for fear of getting eaten alive by the most mosquitoes the both of us had ever seen. So this meant that the rest of the waiting period was spent out on one of the many reef passes surfing alongside the pros and plenty of tanning time. The swell finally picked up for the final, we were lucky to be out in the channel to watch Damien Hobgood beat Mick Fanning in the ... read more
