May 3rd The journey with African Trails starts After 6 months of eagerly waiting to start my trip to South Africa from Kenya, it had finally began. I met the crew and most of the other passengers in the morning while getting ready to go to Arusha, Tanzania. Everyone is very friendly and supportive of each other, but we’ll get to that later. We stopped at a supermarket in the morning (it was like a western market and reminded me of the manufactured strip malls that all look alike back in the USA), we all got money and bought lunch snacks for the day. On the road we went, the trip had began and everyone was in good spirits. The road was not though and it was rough in some spots and took us longer to ... read more

May 2nd In the morning we had the usual breakfast, some tea with milk and eggs before we started the day. Paul, Victor, Maria and I headed for the city center to make our way to Nairobi National Park. After arriving at the bus station we met up with Victor’s daughter Yunis and his girlfriend Gladys. Yunis and Maria get along very well and it was nice to see how the family got along, they made me feel so part of it as well which made it really nice. After getting snacks and drinks for the day we got on a matatu (a minibus transport) and headed for the park. The drive was nice, on the outskirts of the town from the look of it, and we passed by the stadium we had been at the ... read more

Africa May 1st 2010

May 1st We got into Nairobi in the wee hours of the morning, around 5am if I remember correctly, but the downtown was still lively with people coming out of the clubs and heading to the suburbs of Nairobi. We jumped on one of the mini buses to Umoja and looked forward to home sweet home. After getting there we unpacked and had some tea and a bit of breakfast. I took a nap for a bit before starting the day. The plan was to get to the football stadium to watch Mathare United play a lesser known team that had just been promoted to the top league in the Kenyan Football League. We ended up getting to the match late, which meant I wasn’t able to get a picture with the team as was organized ... read more

April 30th I woke up pretty early, despite not having an alarm, must have been my biological clock that woke me up thinking I had slept in too long. The plan was to get up at a decent time to get some photos of the town before I left, and also get some souvenir shopping done. Before that was possible I had to return a couple beer bottles to get my deposit back, that’s how it works out here, like in Latin America, when you buy a bottle of beer you have to pay a small deposit and when you return the bottle you get your money back. It’s not a bad scheme and it really helps out with trash and cost of recycling if you think about it. After that mini mission was accomplished I ... read more

April 29th Rain rain rain, go away and come again another day. That was what Victor and I were singing as the dhow left for the island of Mandatoto. We had some breakfast on the boat with the crew of four and another passenger, an older lady from Hamburg, Germany named Fraukas. The captain of the ship was Simba and he had been in the business for about 20 years. His crew were two 18 year old guys that run around the boat and managed the sails like it was in their DNA, along with them was a 14 year old named Abu who had the day off from school and wanted to get some practice in (and probably earn a buck or two as well). It rained the whole way to the snorkel spot but ... read more

April 28th Victor and I woke up at a decent hour, about 8am if I remember correctly. We promptly headed out for breakfast, chai tea with milk and a samosa for me, black coffee for Victor. It was during this breakfast that I realized that I had lost the first of a few items that I had brought with me. My Swahili-English dictionary, given to me by my friend Melanie had gone missing. I either left it on a stoop while waiting for Victor’s cousin the night before, or on the bus, but I deduced it was on the steps. I was after all on 6 hours of sleep and 20 hours of jet lag, plus 9 hours by bus. After breakfast we headed for the bus station area to get the next one to Lamu. ... read more

April 27th I woke up in the early morning, about 6am and looked outside to attempt to comprehend that I was in Africa. We had to get up early to beat the traffic, and we had planned to get on the bus by about 8am. Well plans changed and Victor and I didn’t end up getting out of the house until about 9:30am. Since the traffic would be in full flow by then we decided to take the next rational step, to get on the dirtbike/motorcycle taxis and weave through traffic to get to Nairobi city central. It was a crazy experience, and I was very apprehensive at first, especially when I had to have my full pack on behind the driver. Probably not the safest ideas, but it really had to be done. April 26th Never underestimate the power of jet lag! I barely got any sleep on the flight to Amsterdam, and that pattern didn’t change on my way to Kenya. So when I landed at 5:30am at the Nairobi airport I was practically sleep walking. On the flight over a met a Norwegian girl named Susanne that was traveling with her aunt and uncle to Ethiopia, with them was an 8 year old boy that they had adopted from Ethiopia 4 years ago. They were going back to adopt another child, from what I gathered it was a long process, and it’s not like they can pick the child out. It’s more based on the need of the child, I imagine. Bless their souls, someday I’d like to adopt as they have. Susanne was really nice and ... read more

April 25th Oh Amsterdam how I love thee. My sixth time in the Dutch capitol and not a bad time yet! The flight from LA landed about 15 minutes late, and as such I made it to the Durty Nelly Pub 15 minutes into the Aston Villa v Birmingham derby (rivalry) match. Straight away I made friends with a group of English guys that were in Amsterdam celebrating a stag (bachelor) party. One of them was a Villa fan like me, his name was Russell. Like all the other guys in the group they were from Luton, England. I had a couple beers with them and then at half time we went to The Bulldog - Café Mack. We watched the second half there and celebrated the Villa win. After the game we sat outside on ... read more

April 22nd This morning Dad and I woke up at a decent hour to get some last minute shopping of mine done. I needed to get some batteries for the trip, as well as an external hard drive. Nothing too exciting, until lunch time. We went down the street from the apartment and ate what Dad called “Hospital Thai”. This is the nickname he gave the restaurant because it is right by the hospital, as well it is only open for lunch and lots of the Kaiser Permanente employees eat there. After a delicious lunch I made my way to Union Station to get the Metrolink to San Bernardino. That’s where Lerina picked me up before we made the drive “up the mountain” to Lake Arrowhead. That’s how awesome she is, she’ll come down the mountain ... read more
