Wow, this is a glorious city! I got in on Thursday night and stayed in quite the lively hostel (another story to be told, but for another time). Then on Friday I embarked across the city to find my accomodations at St. Vincent's Hospital, which is in Fitzoy, a suburb on the Northeast corner of the city center. First of all, let me tell you how CONFUSING the streets are here! First, of course, you drive on the left side of the road. If that wasn't bad enough, there are trams which run down the center of the streets in both directions which do not obey the traffic signals. Oh! And, when making a RIGHT turn, the driver gets in the LEFTMOST lane, and then turns on yellow. Needless to say, I just look in every ... read more

If Beachcomber Island is the party island, then Manta Ray is paradise. A dingy brought us from the main boat to the island where we were greeted by a Fijian band and given frozen papaya juice and a tour of our facilites. The dorms were nicer than Beachcomber, and the island was much bigger, though the beachfront was probably about the same size. We did get some rain that started around 5pm and didn't really let up for the night, but I was actually happy to have a little break from the heat! Technically, it is the wet season, so we really lucked out with weather. The main island was so flooded last week that they had to import fruit from New Zealand. We ended up meeting some British and Irish folks and played card games ... read more

Oh my gosh, I arrived in paradise! I got into Nadi (pronounded Nan-di) on January 30th and realized that it was January 29th still back in the states. So crazy. I stayed in a really nice hostel for $9.00 a night. Unreal. It has a pool and bar and I stayed in a mixed dorm that is a bit cramped, but nice. Everything was very clean. The city of Nadi is nothing to speak of... it's really just a docking point for people to travel to the islands. I met an AMAZING German girl, Sandra, at the airport, and she was staying at the same hostel as me and doing the exact same trip. We hit it off right away, and did everything together. The day after we flew in, we took off early for Port ... read more

Bula! I have arrived safely in Fiji. It is wicked hot here (in a fabulous sunny way) with some really funny brief mist storms (we're talking 45 seconds apiece). Needless to say, I've been lazing by the pool all day. My hostel is ridiculously nice, especially for (ahem) $9.00 a night. To see pics: http://www.nomadsskylodge.com/ppc/offer02-google-nomadsskylodge.php?gclid=CN67sIOetZgCFRwDagodGQTMUg#facilities I met a great girl at the airport, Sandra, and she is not only in my same room at the hostel but she's also going on the same island hopping tour with me tomorrow. So great. She's from Germany and worked for Red Bull but just graduated so now she's on a 4 month travel stint. There have been floods in the islands (it's the wet season) and I guess that some flights were even canceled here last week, but you ... read more

Well, the backpack is packed to the absolute brim, and my room is emptied out for the subletter that's moving in. I can't believe I am actually leaving for this trip that I started planning a year ago. I will arrive in LA around 5:45pm (LA time) and my flight to Nadi, Fiji doesn't take off until 10:30pm. Sigh. I downloaded some movies onto my IPod and have a lot of books, so I will hopefully be able to entertain myself. I arrive in Nadi early in the morning on Friday, January 30th. I actually lose an entire day in travel, which is semi-weird. I gain a day when I come back (also weird!) as well, so I guess it balances out in the end. ;-) I will be staying for a night in Nadi before ... read more
