Hi!
Thanks for your post. There are two ways to travel across Flores. 1)...Public Bus, this option is cheaper and more interesting. 2)Hiring a car and driver. Our friends did this as they had only 3 days in Flores. They had the car and driver for the full 3 days and stopped off at all the interesting sights of Flores. This option I don't know how much the cost is but you can negotiate easily. If you like I can find out the name of the driver that our friends took. He was fun, trusting and knew how to have a good time, and the price was pretty good.
In terms of accommodation, there really isn't much choice in Flores. There are a few options in L'Bajo, but generally are quite expensive by Flores standards. Ruteng they only have the one hotel, and in Bajawa I fully recommend the Hotel Edelweis. The place isn't great but the staff are so friendly and fun. Moni (Kelimutu) has several options, but DO NOT take the hotel that the public bus drops you at...it is way too expensive and standards are bad. Have a look around and you'll find one. In Ende there is only really one hotel (Dwi Putri) and the same in Maumere...there is not really much to see or do in these places. I do recommend staying at Sunset Cottages about 25km outside of Maumere...very peaceful!!
If you have any other questions we'd love to help!
Thanks
Amy & Dan
New member in the forum, been looking for info on Flores, I was "trapped" by your exciting story which, though written in a "documentary" way one could say, it was thrilling and couldn't stop reading it all the way on from Labuan Bajo to the end of the trip! Very precise and informative - thank you!
I have a couple of questions, don't know if it's "proper" to ask them here or send a p.m. - if not, the admins please advise so and I won't do it again. So, we plan to visit the island next August and I'd like to know:
1) If someone does not use the public transport but hires a private car instead, do the same route from Labuan Bajo to Maumere, with intention to make stops at places of interest, how many days would he possibly need? For instance, stopovers at Bajawa and Moni would seem enough or, an extra night, say at Ruteng, would be needed?
2) Any ideas about how much the cost for hiring the car could be - per day?
3) From your on sight experience, the budget not being so much of an issue, are there any better places to stay overnight at the towns mentioned above?
Thanks for any help and congratulations again for your excellent posts!
Hop on Hop off bus pass was bought with Greyhound. We did the Cairns to Melbourne leg of the trip and purchased it in Cairns. It's simple to use and to book, and all the bookings can be done online with your pass 12 hours before travel. Depending on how many places you stop at it's a great way to save money. It ended up roughly being half the price than if we bought individual tickets. Amy & Dan
Betel Nut Cool blog. I would love to go there. I think the "special powder" is ground up lime (the mineral not the fruit), it releases the drug in the betel nut.
Loved following your blog. I relived my trips to south east asia & Aus through you guys. Thanks for the informative posts and great pictures !!! Heres to next time !!
@ liliram... It depends on what interests you have when you go to a certain destination. Bandung itself wasn't really a highlight. But if you travel a little further out of the city then the volcano's are worth a visit.
If I'm honest, you probably didn't miss too much!
@Mike. We took the bus from Kota Bharu's central station direct to Kuala Besut on a Transnasional bus. Not sure on the time's they leave as we just turned up and hopped aboard. Hope this helps.

Hi there I just got back from Indonesia and missed a trip to Bandung. I am not much of a shopper and I do not think I would fancy a Geology Museum, but was Bandung worth the 3 hour train ride? Just curious how much i missed.... ;-)
I think the monorail is done and dusted as far as I know. I think they could really do with one as it works pretty well in KL. Sadly didn't make it to Pondok Indah, but we drove down Fatmawati and thru Kemang....all so different now!! Kemang is like a totally different city, and Bintaro IS a totally different city!
Jakarta! It's nice that Blok M and Pasaraya are still around! And it's a really different city when you go there as a tourist to see the sights, rather than when you live there as an expat.
All the same it's good to know the bus system is working! I heard that when it was first implemented a lot of people didn't take it because it was malu. Any view of the monorail, on that note? ;)
And I remember that McDonalds! It was huge! Please tell me you popped by Pondok Indah for old time's sake!
Never Mind Hi guys well sorry Tioman was not so hot and I'd heard it was a good place to visit. Ref the ants well at least they're full of protein and Dan has always been an Oreo scoffer so maybe next time he'll look before he eats!
Looking forward to meeting up in Jakarta. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Dan for the 10th.
Love Dad

Try kapas Hi, Came across your blog randomly. I have travelled many times as a backpacker to Malaysia and Thailand. I think you would like Palau Kapas - far better snorkelling than Perhentian (Perhentian used to be fantastic until they built the pier). Also, extremely chilled out with many beaches you can walk to that are completely deserted. I'd recommend KB Bungalows - about 50 RM a night and very cute bungalows right on the beach. Don't write off Thailand just because of a few party islands - Ko Lanta is lovely and so is Ko Kradan. Used to love Ko Lipe but it seems to be getting over-run now. If you end up going to kapas on this recommendation (seriously, I am a beach snob after travelling so much, and it is gorgeous) let me know what you think. Have fun!
Hi from dad Hi guys glad you got your tooth fixed ok. The pics look interesting. Could I see Dan that you are actually loosing weight. Good job too. The house in Bali is almost ready to receive you so hold out till next month.
luv dad
hi from dad You've been on the road a long time already and I hope you're still enjoying it. Look after each other. Cold tablets in Indo are very effective so I recommend you take them quickly. England is wet and bloody cold. It hasnt stopped raining most of my visit. Back to Bali next weekend.
love Dad
