While we are staying here in Chemnitz, we've enjoyed some days filled with family, friends and lots of food! Ines and I enjoyed a nice afternoon and dinner together in Dresden while Ralf had meetings. She loves her city is always such a wonderful host. We had a night with friends at the local brewery for some of my foodie favorites. Each time we visit it's a regular stop! Martina and Johannes had us to their home for a delicious lunch and some nice relaxed time to catch up. Johannes is not able to travel by airplane any longer so we are taking advantage of our visit here in Germany to spend as much time together as we can. Later that evening, Friedi, Anja, and Fabian hosted us for a barbeque at their bungalow. Fabian is ... read more

As always, Ralf did an amazing job of selecting the perfect place for some memorable time with our German family. I struggle because I have limited opportunity to get to know them and to hear about Ralf's upbringing from their perspective so it's always nice to have a cozy, relaxing location to spend time together. Ralf's choice was Hotel Hammermühle in Stratoda, Germany. It was a quaint country inn based around a former mill and not surprisingly, the staff was out of this world friendly! We got settled in our sunny room and welcomed Johannes, Martina and Ines a short while later. Ralf had arranged for the traditional coffee service which involves an enormous tray of cakes and coffee or tea in the late afternoon. Then a nice walk on the path near the hotel through ... read more

Ralf made the drive from Trier to Eisenach reaching speeds of up to 220 kilometers per hour which he loves to do since he is accustomed to driving on the autobahn but it still usually results in me putting my seat back, closing my eyes and trying to sleep through it all! But we reached the cute little town of Eisenach by noon to achieve the highly anticipated “Third Castle in Three Days” itinerary (well... technically fourdays but the first and third castle tours within 72 hours of each other!) For a castle loving, fairy tale dreamer Pisces girl from Minnesota, these have notably been some of the most exciting 72 hours of my life. Once again the Wartburg castle is situated on the top of a rather steep hill surrounded by woods. They obviously didn’t ... read more

After our heavy dinner the night before, we decided to start the day with a nice jog along the Mosel River Walk. What a beautiful way to see a little more of this gorgeous area while this charming little village was just coming to life. (Although, admittedly there was a part of me that thought staying in bed and admiring the Reichsburg Castle seemed like an equally adequate way to enjoy the start of our third day in Germany!) After a nice breakfast at the hotel, we loaded up our suitcases (no east feat in itself considering my heavy packing tendencies and the extended duration of our trip!) We hit the road and spent the next few hours driving along the Mosel River towards Trier with stops in several of the little villages along the way. ... read more

Burg Eltz Day two we afforded ourselves the luxury of sleeping in until about 9:00 but then off for a great breakfast and a 20 minute train ride to Moselkern to see what Rick Steve’s calls “one of his favorite castles in Germany”. After leaving the train at the Moselkern station,we followed the signs through the village to the edge of the woods. I had read that one is not able to see the castle from down below as it’s nestled on a hill deep in the woods. The next hour or so we spent hiking the muddy, gradual uphill path anticipating the castle view with each step. The woods are beautiful. Fresh and clean and quiet so despitethe rain sprinkles, we enjoyed the trek tremendously. Finally an hour or so later, we came around a ... read more

After landing in Dusseldorf, we picked up our rental car and successfully maneuvered out of what I still think are the smallest(but cleanest) parking ramps in the world! First stop Koblenz, which is known for the geographical fact that the Rhine and Mosel rivers intersect there. We enjoyed our first German style breakfast in the brewery in Koblenz. Yes, it’s true that the locals enjoy a “kleine beer” (small beer) called Kolsch even with breakfast. Despite the rain, we walked briefly through the village to find the Duetsches Eck. One thing I noticed instantly were the large riverboats, transporting tourists on the Wine country tours on the Rhine and Mosel rivers. You could walk out beyond all the German State flags to the point where the rivers converge. There is a huge monument erected in the ... read more

Europe » Austria » Tyrol June 23rd 2014

When Ralf suggested we spend some quiet downtime in the Alps, I knew I'd be in for an amazing treat but I could have never predicted or even now find words to describe just how breathtaking Austria is or the level of hospitality and service shown to us by everybody we encountered there. We stayed at the Seiwald Wellness Hotel. Typically the term "Wellness Hotel", I've learned, means a resort setting that offers spa and sauna services and onsite pool, various saunas, steam rooms, relaxation areas in a beautiful setting in nature. As I have mentioned in previous blogs, In the areas I have visited in Germany and now Austria, saunas are seen as places of healing and tremendous money and care is put into building these facilities. Seiwald Hotel was no exception. The setting was ... read more

Determined to show me someplace new this time, after our touring plans were waylaid last June by the flooding here, Ralf decides on spending some time for relaxation at a wellness hotel in Austria. En route, we spend one night in the city of Munich. Coincidentally, in the US when you get on the topic of Germany, most commonly people ask if you have been to Munich so I figure it's a must and I am not disappointed! After arriving in the city, we promptly get checked into our hotel, the ArtHotel of Munich, a pretty cool place in itself. The walls are covered with modern art, and while I am typically not a fan of this style, it's a fun, high energy feel. Each of the door to the guest rooms has a unique destination ... read more

One of the things I love about spending time in Germany is the people, Despite the language barrier, they are such a hospitable bunch, always going out of their way to make me feel welcome here. Ralf's friends and family have always welcomed me with open arms and the more time I get to spend with them, the more I count them among my own friends and family. It's not always easy to keep up with the conversation, and thank goodness for a few that try to speak English with me and for Ralf's conscious efforts at translation, but I never feel excluded. My German is coming along but it is my hope some day to be able to speak more fluently. So far during our trip this time we've had a chance to spend time ... read more

Europe » Germany » Saxony » Meissen June 13th 2014

We made plans to have a night with Ines at a small vineyard bed and breakfast outside of Meissen. On our way, we stopped for a self guided tour of Meissen Cathedral. Let me just say, I am certain I have never seen a more beautiful structure in my life. I couldn't take enough pictures to do justice but honestly, it was just beyond amazing. As soon as you entered the cathedral, it smelled musty (aka historic!). There was an organ player filling the cathedral with sounds of a traditional church music and then the sense of sight as your eyes scanned every detail of the building. Words can't even begin the describe the beauty and I am so thankful we decided to stop for a tour on our way to meet Ines. You could go ... read more
