We arrived safely in Germany yesterday greeted by lots of snow! Havent seen much of that this year! We enjoyed it so much that we decided it would be fun to get the car stuck in a snowbank and spend 30 minutes pushing it out. After some teamwork and a borrowed shovel we were able to get out and mad it safely to our destination for the evening, the Folklorehof Inn in Gruena. It iss absolutely gorgeous here...a quaint little tudor style Inn with an outdoor Christmas Market right outside in the courtyard. We had a fantastic dinner at the restuarant last night. For an appetizer we had beef carpaccio (more raw meat...seems to be a trend here!) and for dinner I had cauliflower and roasted potatoes with hollandaise sauce and Ralf enjoyed venison. We topped ... read more

Ralf and I are about to embark on a trip to discover the magic of Christmas tradition in Germany. He has so many fond memories and stories that he has shared about all of his years living there and I can't wait to experience it myself. We will spend 8 days there, visiting with family and friends, attending the opera in Dresden, and visiting some of the Christmas villages. My first fall and winter in Florida has left me anxious for cooler temps and snow. Yes, friends, that is not a typo! I recognize that those of you who know me well are probably choking on your coffee about right now but honestly, I am ready for a week of sweaters, boots, coats, and yes....even snow! I will try to keep up daily with pictures and ... read more

Although it's nearly 6 months after the fact, and I am packing for my next trip to Germany, I am finally posting the pictures from our final day in Berlin during our summer trip! I found Berlin fascinating. There was so much to see and I know we only scratched the surface so hopefully we will get a chance to visit again in the future. Another highlight of this second trip was another stay at the famed "Pink Hotel". While the primary reason for being in Berlin was because we were flying out of the airport there, I am certainly glad we got to spend some more time in this beautiful city. For our last dinner, we ate at a favorite restuarant of Ralf's there. I have forgottent the name now but there are pictures from ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice July 29th 2012

My number one "Bucket List" item finally discovered! During our brief planning for the weeks in Germany, I menitoned to Ralf that that Italy was one the the places I most wanted to see in my life. He made the arrangements for us to visit Venice and Verona during the last 4 days of our trip. While I know I only scratched the surface of everything I would like to see there, it was absolutely amazing. We spent two nights in Venice. The first, on Lido Island right across from the Grand Canal in Venice. Expedia.com did not specify that the reasonably priced hotel I located for our stay was only accessible by car ferry so imagine our surprise while diligently following the trusty GPS lady, she led us right to the waters edge with nothing ... read more

Not that I am back in the States I'd to update my travel blog with the cities I visited during the last week of my stay in Europe. I will start with our trip to Berlin. I hadn't thought much about spending time in Berlin because I was thinking of it more as just the destination of the airport where we would take our flight to Italy. I was pleasantly suprised that we had time to explore the city. My first delight as we were driving into the city looking for our hotel was that I got the see "The Berlin Wall". The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls and today just several sections of the wall remain and are decorated with colorful murals. Due to traffic we did not stop but I ... read more

Greetings from the Bungalow! We enjoyed a lovely dinner at the "Castle Resturaunt" (as I call it) last night. It is an actual castle just down the hill from the bungalow and was the former home of the Duke of Chemnitz. It was an all around relaxing day just updating my blog and resting and then a nice dinner last night. Now we are packing up the bungalow, departing for a three hour drive to Berlin shortly, where we will explore the city a bit and then meet another of Ralf's friends' Swen and his wife for dinner. Tomorrow we fly to Venice!!! For those of you who know me well, this is a big one on the bucket list so I can hardly believe it's almost here. The following day we will drive to Verona ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria July 18th 2012

Ralf and three of his good friends (Berndt, Gerhardt, and Heiko) graciously invited me (or maybe it would be would be better described as "were forced to include me") in their annual bike training event in Schwabthal, which is in Bavaria. Bavaria was beautiful, just like I have seen it on TV and in books...a series of quaint little villages with narrow little streets and cute little homes and businesses, all adorned with adorable window boxes brimming with flowers. According to my personal tour guide, there is a very strong Catholic presence in Bavaria which was evidenced by some sort of crucifix statue or display around every turn in the countryside and in each village. I was feeling a little under the weather during most of our stay here but did enjoy some tasty meals, several ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Rothenburg ob der Tauber July 18th 2012

Rothenburg was our second stop in Bavaria from Sunday to Tuesday. Since there are several towns called simply Rothenburg, I specified the formal name for those that are looking online for more detail about the places I am visiting. In the Middle Ages, Rothenburg was a "free imperial city" and one of Germany's largest cities. Today, it is the country's best preserved medievial walled town. (a very cool sight -make sure you check out the pictures). We found a gorgeous room at Eisenhut which was right on the Market Square, a spot filled with history and shopping! It was a fancy medievial home with historic furnishings and our suite consisted of a sitting room, huge sleeping room complete with chandelier, and a luxury bathroom where I experienced my first bidet, kind of ironic after way too ... read more

Hello Travel Blog Peeps! I'm back...both in a technical sense (limited internet access in recent days of travel) and in a physical sense. Let me say more, but first thanks to those that have left comments on my blog. It's so nice to have a friendly note from home, although these days I am not exactly sure where that is! I still think of Minnesota as my home as my family and my dearest friends are there and I spent so many years of my life there, but actually Florida is my physical home and place where I am building an exciting new life for myself, and finally for the last weeks, I have referred to this cute little bungalow as "home" during our visit to Germany. Regardless, thanks for sharing this journey with me via ... read more

Europe » Germany » Saxony » Augustusburg July 11th 2012

Today's adventures began with a drive to Augustusburg to see the Augustusburg Castle on Schellenberg Mountain. It was built in 1568 for King August the Strong as a hunting castle. Again, it is amazing to me that this massive structure was built as a place for hunting and not a primary residence. We got to tour the inside of the castle which had hundreds of deer and other animal mounts. There was also a carriage house which served as a museum for carriages built over the years, including the carriage of King August. Next we drove through the Erzgebirger (sp?) area of Saxony which was an interesting experience leading to carsickness as Ralf navigated through the narrow, curvy roads of the mountains at top speeds! Let's just say that for a portion of the drive I ... read more
