Yesterday morning started with a walk to the bakery all by myself! Proudly, I was able to order the rolls and bienenstich for our breakfast, pay, and find my way back the the bungalow on my own while Ralf did his morning run. I fumbled through the order in German and then at the end the clerk asked "Is there anything else"?! Still glad I tried in German but I have found that many shopkeepers and waitresses speak some English and are happy to oblige. Many restuarants even offer a menu written in English upon request. Germany is a very friendly country from what I have experienced. After breakfast we took off for Meißen where we toured the famous Meißen china museum. We had a chance to see how the pieces are made, a painstakingly manual ... read more

Okay...so I admit, I was a little bit apprehensive about the rubber boat ride that Ralf's dad and Martina had planned during our visit here. I mean really, 10 adults in a rubber boat...doesn't sound completely safe, right? However, it ended up to be a super fun day and thankfully the rubber boat was much sturdier and more bouyant than the blow-up rubber boats of my youth! We met Johannes and Martina, 4 of thier firiends, Jens (his brother) and Yudena (sp?) in Wechselburg at the River Mulde to begin our two hour boat ride to Rochlitz. Even at 10am in the morning, we were greeted with champagne, wine, shots, and of course beer. Once again, this is all before I actually saw the boat and accompanying life jackets! But once aboard, all was good and ... read more

It's been a very relaxing day today which has been welcome. Last night we had dinner at a cute little local place within walking distance of the bungalow. Very traditional German menu with cute little biergarten outside. I had a brat, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. Ralf had what he called a meatball but it actually looked and tasted like a little meatloaf...very tasty! I thought of you Jamie! Today after our morning run Ralf went to the butcher to pick up ingredients for breakfast. I knew that sounded strange and even stranger when he came home with 4 kinds of meat for breakfast and fresh rolls which are called broten and the main staple for German breakfasts. The most common type is actually similar to a ciabatta roll. Back to the meat...he unwrapped the package and ... read more

Breathtaking...fascinating...just two of the first words that come to mind to describe the feeling of spending these last few days in Dresden. It is filled with Baroque buildings, cobblestone streets, and a rich history. We spent the time strolling through the city that has been termed "the Venice of the Elbe (river) discovering the architecture, taking in the culture, and snapping lots of photographs! I will try to capture as much as I can remember in the photo descriptions but really there aren't words for the beauty I experienced over these past days. For an American traveling in Europe, it's fascinating to imagine how people lived in this area when you have the opportunity to stand in the courtyard of a palace built in the 17th century. Of course, I also had the benefit of the ... read more

I am a little behind in updating my blog. Yesterday, I actually made an entry en route to Dresden using the wireless card but when I went to save it, I lost my connection, and my entire entry! So, today, have just a few minutes before we are out sightseeing for the day to write a few words. The last few days have been so enjoayable as we explore different parts of Saxony. Starting back to Tuesday, I will try to fill in the blanks of what we have been up to. We enjoyed a visit with Jens, Ralf's brother, in Limbach which is a small village near Chemnitz. It was a beautiful drive through rolling hills and countryside and Limbach is actually the town where Ralf was raised so we spet some time exploring there. ... read more

Hallo from Germany! We arrived on Sunday after a few airport delays. In Dusseldorf we ended up having 5 hours until our connecting flight due to a delay in Fort Myers so we took a cab into the downtown area along the Rhine river. We enjoyed a boat ride along the Rhine and then a street fair with about 50 food vendors so I got my first taste of all of Germany's traditional foods. Ralf sampled most of them (see pictures) and I found a new favorite Reibekuchen which was a fresh hasbrown patty essentially, served with applesauce on the side. I know - strange but delicious! After our arrival in Berlin, we rented a car and made the two hour drive to Chemitz, although, it ended up to be less than 2 hours due to ... read more

I will be taking Jamie and Alec to the airport in a few hours. We all enjoyed this time together so much. Yesterday we spent the day on the boat, stopped at Fishermans Village in Punta Gorda to eat lunch and watch the Germany team play soccer in the semi-finals, saw a ton of dolphins, kneeboarded in Charlotte Harbor and finished the day with a great dinner at "THe Fishery" where we serenaded Alec with "Happy Birthday" in at least 12 languages!... read more

Despite some uncooperative weather the first few days resulting from Tropical Storm Debbie, the trip has been fun filled with many great memories of the kids first visit to Florida. We had our first lunch on Fort Myers Beach at a bar/ restaurant known for it's Green Bay Packer decoration (a special surprise for Alec). We have also expored Boca Grande beach and Manasota Key beach. Yesterday we took a boat ride in the canals but weren't able to access Charlotte Harbor due to the lock being temporarily closed. We are going to make another attempt today so that the kids can swim in the Gulf of Mexico.... read more
