Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236On Tuesday we planned to sleep late to shake off the rest of the jet lag. We have found that as long as we stay up and keep moving on first arriving in Europe, then turn in early and sleep late the second day, we are able to get on the new time zone's schedule pretty quickly. The only thing planned for today was an inside visit to Buckingham Palace. During the late summer when the royal family is away, the palace is opened for tours of the staterooms and gardens. I had purchased tickets online through Golden Tours for a walking tour of the palace, followed by a high tea service at the Grosvenor Victoria Hotel. The tour was okay; our guide gave us a brief intro to the palace, but she didn't ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236The overnight flight arrived in London as scheduled. We sailed though immigration and customs. It seems that every other country than the US has easier access. This is the first time that we have packed small enough to carry on everything with us. We each have a rollaboard suitcase, and Philip has his computer case and I have a small tote bag. We could take about anything we wanted on the Continental flight from IAH to LHR, but I was worried about how much we will be able to take on the Austrian airlines flights. We do get better and better at packing small most every time we travel. This trip includes two distinct climate areas, so that added to the problem of what to pack. London should be cool and wet, but the ... read more

Geo: 30.3883, -95.6963We had a great time with Paula and Bill. They fixed up a wonderful guest room retreat for us and showed us what amazing hosts they are. Dinner at The County Line on the lake was delicious, and the thunderstorm added spark to the ambiance. After dinner, we watched Couples Retreat and had a good time laughing (mostly Paula was laughing) through it. It was a cute movie.Bill stayed up with us the whole time even though he had just returned from an overnight flight himself. The Happy Stringer B&B provided a sweet breakfast and even a scrumptious bar-be-que lunch before we headed to the airport for our overnight flight to London. The short stay with the Stringers was much fun; the best part just getting to visit and catch up with two of our ... read more

Geo: 48.8534, 2.3488Our flight home consisted of a Sunday evening flight to Paris with an overnight stay there. Then we flew to Houston and on to Albuquerque on Monday, arriving in the late afternoon. At CDG we were treated as transit passengers, so we were relieved of going through one of the steps of security before getting on the plane. After going through the metal detectors, the security folks had another line where they were hand-checking every bag and wanding every person. When we got up to that line, something about our boarding passes looked different to the agent--probably the fact that they were printed on Alitalia card stock rather than Continental paper. They asked, and I explained, that we had checked in the night before in Rome and had stayed overnight at a hotel in ... read more

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823Outside our apartment on the way to the Metro stop, we pass by a long string of advertising signs. The signs are different every time we pass by. It seems that one candidate will cover a long stretch of the signs with a series of identical paper posters, only to have them shredded or covered over with another candidate's signs before the day is over. The signs we see in the mornings as we are going out for the day are different than the ones we see in the evening when we are coming back to our apartment. The country has regional elections coming up March 28-29 and Premier Berlusconi's party has been excluded from the election in Rome because, basically, they didn't get the paperwork in on time. We've heard (mostly) and seen ... read more

Geo: 41.9023, 12.4581This morning while Phil worked on school stuff, I walked down the street looking for a quick breakfast. I bought some fruit and snacks at the alimentari that we had gone to earlier in the week. The shop was busy with locals doing their shopping. Quite a few people had full baskets of groceries, more than I expected. There were still a few though that seemed to be buying just enough food for one day. On the way back to the apartment, I tried a different shop and found fresh croissants and other pastries, With those and a Coke for me and a to-go espresso for Phil, I had everything we wanted. This sales clerk didn't speak English, but with a little bit of Italian (I'm better with food words than any others) and ... read more

Geo: 41.9, 12.4833Trying to see as many places as we can while we are here, we made stops at the Trevi Fountain, the Piazza del Popolo, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, the Capitoline Museum, the Victor Emmanuel monument, and Trajan's Column, but we started the morning with a tour of the Borghese Gallery. Following advice from the guidebooks we read, we went upstairs to the Pinacoteca first while most of the visitors were on the first floor. After touring there, we went down to the main displays on the first floor. The gallery requires all cameras and bags, including purses, to be checked before entering the gallery, so I have no photos. I imagine that if everyone took photos, then the experience of looking at the art would be very different--interrupted by flashes and waiting while ... read more
