Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica December 27th 2010

Geo: 9.98102, -84.8392Today we spent the day relaxing. Philip had work to do on the computer so Erin and I explored the resort some more. We spent time on the beach and had lunch at the snack bar (hamburgers and pizza) followed by dessert in the regular restaurant. We planned to do a couple of things from the list of daily activities, but we just never made it. I forgot about going to the decorative towel folding lesson--I guess we were "busy" watching the waves. Then Erin and I were going to go to the song trivia contest, but at first we couldn't find it, and then it seemed to be all Spanish language songs that we didn't know. We found the Fruit Bar instead. I waited in line there to order while Erin went back ... read more

Geo: 10.4797, -84.7156This was our second full day in Costa Rica and we planned the longest trip for today. We headed northeast to see the Arenal Volcano and enjoy the hot springs, but our first stop for today was at a combination Butterfly and Toucan House and gift shop. We visited the butterflies first, but saw only a few. Most of the ones we did see were large with a beautiful blue on the top and a grayish brown underside. There were a few others, too, but this was not a particularly worthwhile stop just for the butterflies. However, they also had a toucan in captivity. We all walked into the cage with the toucan and were able to stroke it's soft belly. The toucan was very tame and would step onto anyone's arm if they ... read more

Geo: 9.62, -84.63Christmas morning in Puntarenas is warm and beautiful. We had a full day with all the highlights being Costa Rican animals -- monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas, lots of birds and a blowfish.Chico and Andrew picked us up early for the day and we first stopped at a private house that Chico knew about. The lady who lives there lets people come by and feed the family of monkeys that lives in her yard (for two dollars per person). I don't know if she is on the regular tourist circuit, but we weren't the only visitors that morning. Several of the white-faced Capuchin monkeys were eager to accept handouts, but only after looking in the direction of the alpha male to see if it was okay with him. Philip noticed that the monkeys seemed to know ... read more

Geo: 9.98102, -84.8392It was a very early morning wake-up call to get to the airport for a 6:30 flight. Everything went well along the way. Erin spent the night at our home so we could go to the airport together. We met Shaun and Yvette at IAH and had lunch together before the flight to San Jose, Costa Rica. This was the first time for Erin and Yvette to meet. When we got to San Jose, our smiling driver, Francisco Núñez González, also called Chico, was at the airport waiting to take us to the resort. I like him already. He brought along a young tour guide, even though we didn't expect him to. Chico is really friendly and Andrew, the guide, is full of information about the country. Although we had talked tentatively about using ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236After an overnight at the Hilton Heathrow, we are back in the same seats on the plane for the return, first to Houston, then on to Albuquerque. The seat belt sign was on for the first two and a half hours of the flight, for no obvious reason—just a few little bumps. In fact the head of service for the flight said early on that we did not expect any rough weather until possibly over Newfoundland and then as we descend into IAH. I have noticed that non-American airlines are much quicker to turn off the seat belt sign than any American companies. Since Philip and I each tossed a few worn out garments and shoes on the trip, and since we didn't buy much, our luggage is no heavier nor bigger than it ... read more

Geo: 44.0833, 26.6333Our trip home began with flights to London today, by way of Vienna on Austrian Airlines. However, before we left, the last stop on the tour was to Bucharest, Romania for a drive around the city and a visit to the second largest building in the world, Parliament Palace, aka Ceausescu's Palace. Ceausescu started construction on it in 1984 when many of the people in the country were poor and hungry. He worked on it until his death in the revolution of 1989. The dictator never planned to live in the palace, in fact, he was probably afraid to stay there. He installed ventilation holes in the ceiling in case anyone tried to murder him with poisonous gases. Ceausescu simply wanted a showpiece. And it is showy, including the one million cubic meters of ... read more

Geo: 44.0875, 27.2549The Black Sea Discovery cruise finally made it to the Black Sea. The last thirty miles was by motor coach, but we made it to Varna, Bulgaria. The first stop at the Archeological Museum was interesting. A few artifacts in the collection date back to the Old Stone Age (10,000 – 100,000 BC). The museum has its charms and is a long way from decrepit, but it lacks any kind of style and most of the displays are very ordinary and somewhat shabby. The country doesn't have money to spend on making the place attractive. As in many of the places we have visited on this trip, photography is not allowed inside. After visiting the museum, we had some free time to see the city. Varna is a popular resort location for Bulgarians and ... read more
