Mindelo, Cape Verde Islands The westernmost promontory of Africa, Cape Verde gives its name to the group of islands almost 400 miles to the west. Mindelo, is the main town of St Vincent with picturesque and colourful Portuguese colonial buildings. Cape Verde became independent in 1975 from the Portuguese. The islands have led a chequered history, for along time the economy of the islands was based on little else but the slave trade, the islands being on the route from West Africa to the New World. Nowadays the economy depends on the airport on Sal, the port facilities in Mindelo and agriculture. Coffee and bananas are the main exports, with salt being produced on the island do Sal. Fishing is a flourishing industry and a by product from the volcanoes is exported to make cement. Arrived ... read more

Southampton to Tenerife We left Southampton with clear skies and great fireworks before heading out into the English Channel. By 3am on the Tuesday we were heading into the first storm, we awoke in the morning in the grip of a Force 8 gale. Not too much walking on deck then!! As we cruised further South it has become warmer and we docked in Santa Cruz with sunshine and temperatures of 22 plus. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the Canaries and... read more

DUBROVNIK 4th May 2015 I wonder if there is a more beautiful harbour to write a blog than Dubrovnik's. . We sailed in at 07.30 this morning and unfortunately we depart at 14.30, so not really enough time to truly appreciate the stunning beauty of this town. We did get an extra hours sleep as the clocks went back last night (we still have time changes to go yet!)It was going to be busy as the P & O Oceana followed us in and will do again in Venice tomorrow (Happy days!) The Croatian poet and writer Jure Kastelan wrote 'If there were several Dubrovniks in the world only one of them would be the real Dubrovnik, the genuine, authentic and only city made of stone and light'. Croatia finally became an independent country in 1991 ... read more

CORFU Sunday 3rd May 2015 Before going to bed last night it was another time change - clocks forward an hour so we can be on Greek time. Having left Messina, we travelled along the Messina Strait around the toe of Italy and travelled towards the island of Corfu. Another glorious day greeted us, a late breakfast before heading off into Corfu Town. Corfus main income is from tourism with its main export is olive oil. The shuttle dropped us at the Spilia gate near the old port. The old quarter is likened to Venice with its tall houses and narrow alleys and the British influence is evident with the bandstand and the cricket square (an all weather strip now). Our walk took us from the 'New Fort' a 16th century Venetian construction with the British ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Messina May 3rd 2015

MESSINA Saturday 2nd May 2015 Another glorious day as we sailed into the city of Messina which is the third largest of Sicily. Most of our cruisers were departing for tours towards Taormina and Mount Etna, so a leisurely breakfast was order of the day. We were just going to walk the city. Messina was flattened by an earthquake in 1908 and whilst it has little industry the harbour is always busy with up to 60 ferries a day crossing to mainland Italy. One of its major attractions which survived and has been enhanced is the Duomo, a 12th century church and campanile. We headed here for 12 noon because the campanile holds one of the largest clocks in the world with an astronomical side and a series of figures hitch perform tricks every day much ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Cádiz » Castellar de la Frontera April 30th 2015

CADIZ Approaching Cadiz on a bright Spring morning, the towers of the churches and buildings are the first thing you notice. You sail right into the heart of the city, a city that dates back to the 12th Century BC and is the oldest continuously inhabited in the Western world. After two days at sea, it was nice to get off and stretch our legs. In glorious sunshine, we took a short walk to the Plaza de San Juan de Dios where the Town Hall is and the open air brings the essence of Cadiz to life. We walked through cobbled streets out onto the main thoroughfare towards the Cathedral. A small detour took us into the municipal museum (free entry) where we took in some modern Spanish American art in the form of sculptures and ... read more
