The past two days of our trip have been very different than the first 2.5 weeks. The first part was very active, hiking, kayaking, and exploring remote locations nearly every day. Now we are making our way up the more populated east coast of the South Island, spending more time with the city dwellers. It's a weird feeling! Yesterday was a day spent focusing on penguins! It was a bit of a rainy and cool day, but the penguins' daily activities don't change on rainy days, so we were out and about with them. We went out in the afternoon to Penguin Place, a yellow eyed penguin reserve on the Otago Peninsula outside the city of Dunedin. In a nutshell, a man bought a 1000 acre sheep and cattle farm on the Otago Peninsula years ago, ... read more

Wifi has been hard to get the past few days, so I'm a bit behind on posting. We spent Wednesday and Thursday making our way slowly from Te Anau (Doubtful Sound) to Dunedin. The distance isn't long, but there are many places to explore in between. The area we explored is called, "The Catlins", and is an area of New Zealand where rolling farmland meets the Southern Ocean. I wasn't originally planning to include this area in our trip itinerary, but when I booked our flights I accidentally booked our return for March 9th, not March 8th, so we had an extra day to explore. Gee. What a disappointment. ;-). Having seen this area now, I'm so very glad I made that "mistake". Wednesday night we stayed on a farm on Slope Point Road in The ... read more

Today was the day. My long awaited sea kayaking trip on Doubtful Sound had finally arrived. We had to be up early this morning. We had to meet at the outfitter's office at 7:15am, and it was about a 20 minute drive from our motel. Getting to Doubtful Sound is a bit of a labor of love. After meeting our small group of ten, we boarded a boat for a 45 minute cruise to West Arm (that sounds peaceful, but it really is a little fishing boat, engine running wide open across the lake, so you can imagine how big the lake is for that to last 45 minutes), and then about a 45 minute mini bus ride on a gravel road to where you put in. I'm not at all complaining, mind you, simply describing ... read more

We are in an area of New Zealand known as Central Otago. The country is not divided into states, but rather districts or regions (I asked a New Zealander for the proper term and he didn't really know, so I suppose it's not that important.). We are in the central part of, "Otago". This area is mountainous and littered with natural lakes. We are staying in a town called Wanaka on the southern edge of an enormous (I mean 26 miles long by 6 miles wide huge) freshwater lake, surprisingly known as - you guessed it - Lake Wanaka. We were lucky to find a B&B where we have the entire top floor of a house to ourselves, including an expansive deck that looks out to the lake. It's so pretty. The hosts are very kind ... read more

We didn't have wifi yesterday, so I didn't get a chance to blog. I wish I had, because yesterday was such an enjoyable day for us. Spirits were high and we were in full memory making mode. We made the drive from Fox Glacier to Wanaka today, and when we arrived at our B&B and reconnected with wifi, we found out that despite the efforts of our pet sitter, my parents, and our vet, one of our kitties passed away today. To say our spirits are dampened is an understatement. As overwhelmed as we were last year dealing with our losses and taking on the care of two of my sister's cats and grandma's cat in addition to our own cats, we love each one of them and do our best to provide them with a ... read more

It's Friday morning here, the sun is shining, the sky is crystal clear, and the mountains are calling my name. We have some beautiful weather for the hikes I have planned for today. We arrived in Fox Glacier yesterday afternoon. There are two glaciers here, Fox and Franz Josef . Franz Josef is about 30 minutes north of where we are staying in Fox Glacier Township. We drove through that village yesterday, stopped for lunch, and popped in at the visitor's center. Franz Josef is more touristy than Fox, and I try to avoid the overly touristy spots at all costs. Fox is a quiet village, and out the kitchen window of our cabin I watch two horses graze and see the mountains a very short distance away. I would love to always have this view ... read more

Well our NavMan died today. We began to notice her decline while we were still on the North Island. She would suddenly lose her gps signal in the middle of a wide open space - no mountains or trees in the way to block the signal. She would also say "turn left" and while we were in the intersection getting ready to turn, she would suddenly say, "turn right". We thought she was just a bit dumb, but I think it was just Alzheimer's setting in. Yesterday she died for good. Perrrrrfect timing, NavMan. The South Island is much more remote than the North Island, and the roads much more twisty. Thankfully I bought a big map of the country before we left. And hopefully we will find an Avis where we can exchange the unit ... read more

What a beautiful day for sea kayaking! After three days of rain, today is bright and beautiful! Lucky for us! Again, one of my favorite things about the trip was the company of other international travelers. We enjoyed the company of a Romanian couple, LA newlyweds, and two Swedish guys on gap year travels. Those two guys were especially funny. They wore hats with little propellers on them so we knew how windy it was, and they were trying to sell us on their favorite NZ activities of bungy jumping, rapelling, and sky diving. Ummm....No thanks! They are staying here for three months and are living in a car the whole time because they are short on funds (obviously because they are spending their funds on potentially deadly adventure activities). It was hilarious to hear them ... read more
