Today turned out to be a day of rest. Much needed rest. We've been going full speed ahead since we arrived one week ago (already), and my body put up the surrender flag last night. I don't know if it was bad food or the combination of the four hours in the car, the three hour ferry ride, and my faulty inner ear that got me, but I was incredibly nauseated last night and had a bum stomach most of the day today. I thought we were supposed to be kayaking today, but when I called to reschedule this morning, they told me I'm on the books for tomorrow! Yahoo! Things have a way of working out sometimes. If one has to be a bit under the weather on vacation, I must admit this is a ... read more

I woke up this morning feeling a bit sad that we were already leaving the North Island. We had so much fun there! We were off to an early start, having to drive four hours to Wellington to catch our afternoon ferry. We made it in plenty of time, stopping for lunch at Subway on the way down. Familiarity is good when you don't have much time. It was an intermittently rainy, sunny, foggy day. It was actually chilly enough on the ferry that jeans and a rain jacket felt good - weird in summertime! The ferry was beautiful despite the low visibility. Aaron really wanted to go find a comfortable seat inside where it was warm and dry, but I couldn't bring myself to go inside when 1. I can sit inside all winter in ... read more

I may have a slight addiction to waterfalls. I like to think that we make decisions together on which hikes to take in the various parks and places we visit, but Aaron knows and I know too, that if there is a hike to a waterfall listed in a guide, all other hikes are essentially off the table. Case in point, yesterday I spent three dollars on a Tongariro National Park hiking booklet. There are 42 glorious pages of hikes detailed in this booklet. Two of them end up at waterfalls. We did both of those hikes. I'm sure the other hikes are beautiful, especially in an area like this, but I barely glanced at them. Aaron, being the good sport that he is, looked at the book after I did, and "chose" the waterfall hikes. ... read more

Yesterday was such a great day! We arrived at Tongariro National Park early in the morning, and spent the morning and afternoon enjoying the beautiful surroundings. Staff at our lodge recommended the Taranaki Falls Loop for a great hike...how did she know I love waterfalls?! It was such a beautiful day outside, 70 degrees and sunny with a gentle breeze. It just doesn't get much nicer than that! The views were spectacular, too. When we arrived at the falls after about an hour of hiking, we sat on the boulders near the plunge pool and relaxed, cooling off in the spray. Both of us were in awe of the beauty of the place. We made it back to the lodge around five last night, cooked dinner in the community kitchen, and did laundry. New Zealand is ... read more

Short post today - wifi has been scarce. Yesterday was a great day! We drove two hours from Auckkand to Waitomo through lovely farmland. I've never seen so many cows in my life! We checked into our B&B, had lunch at a tiny brew pub down the street, and headed out on our cave trip. Thank you Trip Advisor for recommending Spellbound Tours and the smaller caves. Six of us hopped in a little van with our guide and drove past the main caves where tour buses were stacked on top of each other. We drove 30 minutes into the hills, hiked into a valley, donned our hard hats, and headed into the cave. Our guide has been caving here his whole life. He taught us so much about these caves and the glow worms. He ... read more

Day two started very early for us! We were up at 4:15am and eating breakfast in the room at 4:30. That sounds really early, and it is, but you must know that after our fun morning at Ambury Regional Park yesterday morning, we checked in to the motel, had lunch, shopped for a few breakfast items and snacks, and decided to take a nap before a planned night out for dinner and a stroll in Auckland. We laid down for the nap at 3pm, and woke up this morning at 4:15am. Yes, we slept for over 13 hours! We were wiped out! We each woke up from time to time during that long stretch, but we were both so tired we didn't bother to wake the other for dinner. If you know me at all, you ... read more

When we got to our hotel this morning it wasn't even 7am here yet. I had requested an early check-in, but knew that a 6:30am check-in would be pushing it. The very nice desk clerk recommended a local bakery for breakfast and said our room would be ready at 11am. Perfectly okay with us as 11am was more than fair. So, we had breakfast (delicious!), plotted our location on Google Maps, and found a regional park to explore this morning. We are huge fans of any kind of park - city, state, regional, national - anything that gets us out and about and seeing the "real" place we are in, not the tourist traps. What we found at this park totally surprised us - it was also a working farm! I love farms and animals and ... read more

Hello from New Zealand! We are so excited to be here! Flight was great, seats were comfortable, and we slept some - not enough, but some. I timed our flight, and it took us just over 12 hours to get here. A few bumps as we crossed the equator, but we expected that. Passport Control at AKL was so simple and we were out of the airport in no time. Since we are a bit sleep deprived, we were really struggling with the New Zealand accent at the rental car counter. The staff was incredibly patient and kind with us, and we are now proud renters of a brand new Toyota Corrolla. I hope it looks brand new when we are done with it. Whew. Getting used to driving on the left side of the road ... read more
