Korea spring 2 003
Field of tulips in the little park near Katie's house. Busan
What, oh what can I say about this lovely city? It’s an absolute marvel to me most of the time. Sometimes I just see the lights and the crazy street vendors and think, “Oh my gosh, I live in Asia!”. And then there are the times I see men spit phlegm on the ground inside the subway station, or even in the street and I think, “Oh lord, that’s Asia for you.”
It’s truly a mix of the best and the worst, as well as the new and the old. In some ways this place is so much more advanced then we are. My apartment has a camera hooked up with the doorbell, so I can see who is outside on a little screen, but they don’t always put toilet paper in public bathrooms.
Overall, I just adore this city. I’ve heard people call it really ugly, and I can sometimes understand their point. It doesn’t have as many parks as Seoul, and there are a lot of boring buildings….but the beaches are really nice and as a city it has a certain appeal. I would like more parks, but I’ve been to a few here

This is also in the little park near Katie's house. and there and they were great! Besides, it seems I spend a lot of my weekends away from home, so it’s nice to be able to go and enjoy the greenery and gardens of other places. It makes me cherish that time even more.
So far, I haven’t done too, too much in Busan. In my free time I like to rest! Here are some things I did in Busan:
-Puppy café (not where you eat puppy, but where you pay like 5 bucks and get all the smoothies you want, and of course, there are lots of puppies running around to play with!)
- Haeundae Beach. I just walked around during a moon festival, when they had a huge fire! I got some hair burned off…now I have an alfalfa cow lick. It’s sexy.
- U.N. Cemetery. It’s kind of sobering and very sad to see all the people who died in the war at a younger age than I am now.
- Park by the Cemetery- I can’t wait to go lie there and read books in the summer time.
-Eating. My favorite things are Sum Gup Sul (you grill your own beef

They were changing the flag at the U.N. cemetery. on a plate and then add onions and sauce and wrap it in lettuce), Mandu (filled dumpling, it’s good boiled but better fried), Bulgogi (marinated beef or pork with veggies, REALLY good), Kkak du-gi (spicy or kimchi’d radishes) Sum get-tung (Chicken soup), Shabu Shabu (I like the beef one where you boil veggies in a broth and then add the super thin cut beef where it almost cooks instantly. Then it’s kind of like a soup. Yum) and Bibimbap (a rice dish mixed with veggies, and sometimes beef and egg.)
-Shopping. I’ve been to the traditional market in Nampo-dong twice. I bought lots of gifts for people back home there! 😉 And I’ve also done some shopping in the underground shopping mall that connects my subway station to the really huge, confusing one next to it, Seomyeon. I bought a really funny shirt that has a picture of a bunny wearing an American Flag scarf that says, “Offspring of a proud Austro-Hungarian Immigrant and a First Generation American.” And one with a picture of the Beatles that says, “The Baetles”. I love them.
-Seomyeon. I’ve explored this area a bit. It’s wonderful. It has everything I could ever

This is a pathway for all the unnamed fallen soldiers from the Korean war. Very sobering. need; tons of shops, food places (McDonalds, TGI Fridays, Pizza Hut, Cold Stone, Baskin Robbins, Dunkin Donuts, and Krispy Kreme, Outback) and at least one really nice movie theatre. They also have a bookstore with the largest English section in Busan. :-) Yep!
-Kyungsung. I’ve explored around this area just a little with Katie. It’s pretty close to her. It’s kind of like Seomyeon, but a little more hip. It’s near a University so there are lots of bars and stuff. Also, the culture center is nearish, and it’s pretty beautiful.
I’ve mostly just done a lot of hanging out with my friends. We’ve met up for dinners, some had parties, ect. It’s been a blast. I couldn’t ask for anything better. I really couldn’t. I just can’t thank God enough for knowing what is best for me. I’m so lucky.
