Another early start today up at 5.30am for breakfast before taking the Tuk Tuk to the bus, first time he took us to the wrong place! But we got there in the end, we had chosen to take the Makong Express and I have to say the service was excellent. We got there a little early checked our backs in and then they checked our passports before getting on the bus were we were given a small breakfast, a cold towel and some water. The river crossing was a little unpleasant due to the small children knocking on the windows asking for food, when we were driving off I saw the same kid with a load of eggs he was selling so did not feel as bad but still horrible to see the poverty that exists in Cambodia still.
Just before the boarder there was a 20 min stop for breakfast if you wanted, we had some nice coffee. When we got the border the rep took all our passports and got us all sorted all we had to do was get out and smile for the camera, finger prints again and that was that. Two mins later we were
at the Vietnam border with the same thing, queue up wait for your name to be shouted out collect your passport, bags through the scanner and then back on the bus. I was so impressed with the service, the rep tells you where you are, what’s going to happen and how long to the next point. I would really recommend them to anyone doing that journey.
We got off the bus and after the usual hustle of the taxi drivers we found a nice guy who pointed us in the direction of our hotel which was pretty close. When we got near another nice man walked us to our hotel and did not even ask for any money which was a nice change!! In the hotel we were a little early so we headed across the road for a real Vietnamese coffee (nearly as good as the ones your get on Bermondsey Street!) after some nice soup as well time to check in and more imporantantly find our route to the Mekong the next day so it was off to the world famous Singh Cafe. After so much success this place is more like a travel agent now you
walk in tell them what you want hand over your $28 get your tickets, booked it, packed it and well you know the rest!!! Not bad hey $28 for two days travel with lunches tours and an overnight stay!
After this we booked a show and dinner on the river and then it was back to the hotel for a sleep but first a quick stop at the market to get the filters to make the nice coffee! Johanna also bought some Wessel coffee, for those of you like Johanna who do not no about this I will enlighted you! But first a word of warning its not a pleasant process. Its basically what is says on the tin, they feed the wessel the coffee beans that then sit in the stomach and disolve a bit but not all!! The Wessel then does its business and they wash the beans making what they say is the best coffee in the world. It is good actually not crap at all!!!
The nice man picked us up at 6pm and it was off to the water puppet show which was let's just say a cultural experience!! Very funny in places
and amazing how they did it, after that on to your cycles’ to be driven around town before getting to the boat for our 5 course meal. All pretty good value to at about $25 each, the river was very nice and the buildings that our being constructed are huge, never mind China watch out for Vietnam!
