Hanoi was a lot like other large cities that I've been to in Asia: the lake was cool and touristy, the old quarter showed some poverty and street markets, and the rest I saw was relatively modern. The main differences between Vietnam and China for me were a) the french influence of architecture in Vietnam, and b) the extreme modernity of China.
