Today we had the kayak trip which Lyndsey had been wanting to do for some time. We hired a boat for the day at Halong Bay, which came complete with two kayaks, a skipper, a cook and lunch. It was a very reasonable price, and we had the boat to ourselves. After a two hour journey, we arrived at the first stop. It was pretty cold, as it's winter here. The temperature is like the UK in about late Febuary, chilly and with a nip in the air. When we arrived, the skipper hopped in a kayak and paddled off towards a cave. He returned, making the international mime for "Nay luck, the tide's too high". Ss we hung about until we were given the go ahead. Suitably lfe-jacketed, we paddled off towards the cave. It ... read more

well...our adventures definately begin yesterday arrived at halong bay and boarded our junk...opposite to what it sounds like...it is a big beautiful wooden boat. we were the youngest on the boat by about 40 years...they were 'the golden oldies'. Started the tour with a massive seafood lunch...full once again! we cruised around the bay to the cave of surprises..very pretty indeed. then being as adventurous as we are we decided to go kayaking..despite being freezing cold we got into our short boardies and toughed it!. we had an hour to paddle around the islands before our boat came back to pick us up and it was great fun, we only had one close encounter with another boat..great navigation skills! so after an hour we got back to the meeting point, a piece of wood floating in ... read more

Day 230, 16th January Halong City West - Halong City East (ferry) Cat Ba Island The other guys found us at our hotel, they were in the other Halong City (east) and told us that they had hired a boat for US$40 that would take us and our six bikes to Cat Ba town on Cat Ba Island, inclusive was a tour of Halong Bay! So we got ready and caught the small ferry over to Halong City East and boarded our boat with another backpacker, Christoph from France. The small motor-boat seemed top-heavy with our bikes on the roof and we became a little concerned as it set off into the jungle of islands that dot the bay. The jouney was nothing far from magnificent. Azure waters with thousands of rocky little tree-covered islands. We ... read more

Day 228, 14th January Tan Mai - Dam Ha - Tien Yen I sweated so much last night that my sleeping bag was soaked this morning. All of our tents were wet too due to the high humidity. We said our farewells to the farmers who’d let us free-camp and were on the road for ten. Me not feeling fully up to strength, probably due to that home-made hooch last night, and having to stop to rest regularly at cafes along the road. It was difficult ordering veggie stuff, so strangely enough, I just decided not to eat and bought one of those colonial-style Vietnamese hats instead - just don’t ask about the logic here! Later on I managed to eat some tofu, rice and salad, and also bought some nice chopsticks for two quid. The ... read more

We got picked up just after 8am & arrived at Ha Long City at about 11.30am; we had bumped into the Bristol Boys again but didn't expect them to be on the same boat as us, funny enough they were. They also managed to bump into Cliff Richard on the Pier & spoke to him & got a photo. I was so gutted that I had managed to walk past Sir Cliff & not even notice! We had lunch on the boat & met two Irish girls, Sinead & Rachel, they were good fun so we after lunch the eight of us sat on the top deck & watched some of the three thousand islands pass us by, it was such a beautiful place, my photos don't do it justice. Ha Long Bay is another UNESCO ... read more

We left Hanoi on Monday and headed Haylong bay for a 2 night boat trip. We saw Peter and Charlie at the services on the way (they were also doing a boat trip) and it turned out they did get lost (whatever!). We arrived at the port to find millions of boats and people everywhere. The boys as it happens ended up on the same boat as us, but the lucky buggers got to see a celebrity on the pier... only Cliff Richard (Oh my days!). We must have walked straight past him, God knows what he was doing in the public area, and I thought that he would have had his own private boat! We made some new friends too, Sinead and Rachel from Ireland and Shannon and Zack from USA. Our first stop was ... read more

... read more

hello everybody, we are cruising halong bay. the area is so beautiful, the water is emerald green and the 3000 islands provide excellent scenery from our boat. unfortunetly all they serve on the boats is seafood yuck!! and to make matters worse the same seafood everyday yuck from tash!!! apart from cruising the bay we went on a jungle trek. our guide took us through dense jungle through the cat-ba national park. we climbed to the top of a small mountain or large hill depending on your perspective the view was amazing. we have also been kayaking. we also had a 'incident' with some drunk european tourists. we went on an extra excursion which actually turned out to be quite poor. several of the others on the boat refused to pay so we were stuck on ... read more

Hanoi is the gateway to the northern part of Vietnam, and most travellers use it as a base to visit Sapa and Halong Bay. We were signed up for both, as Meg - a seasoned traveller - had recommended both locations. We had booked our tours through our hotel in Hanoi, and the hotel owner indicated that it would be pleasant in Halong Bay, and that swimming was definitely on the agenda. So it was with great enthusiasm that we packed our daypacks with swimsuits, suntan lotion, hats and some t-shirts and other light clothing. A short 3 hour bus journey later and we were at the pier ready to board the boat. We were with a great group of travellers and we were all coming to the same conclusion that perhaps it wouldn't be as ... read more
