Day Two in Vietnam
We traveled out of the city today to the Mekong Delta for a boat and canoe ride to Unicorn Island. Along the way we viewed rice patties (often amidst ancestoral mausoleums - the Vietnamese people believe in reincarnation) and lotus blossom fields ( the lotus is Vietnam’s country flower). We enjoyed honey tea, with local snacks of lotus seeds, peanut brittle, shredded coconut, dried bananas, and fresh fruits with chili salt and accompanying gifts of native music and song. Sipping milk from a freshly prepared whole coconut was a delight! Did you know that Vietnam honors for animals (one of which is real)? … the Phoenix for female beauty, the dragon for power, the unicorn for prosperity, and the turtle for longevity… An authentic luncheon of elephant ear fish, rice balls, spring rolls, shrimp on lemon grass skewers and pho was a true adventure. We returned to home base after a visit to a local lacquer factory and couldn’t resist a purchase!
