So from Malaysia we caught a ferry to Thailand and headed to Krabi where we had booked another nice hotel with a pool. We’re definitely getting used to our creature comforts now, hot water, plug points, air conditioning - we’re turning into champagne backpackers!!! The beach wasn’t all that where we were staying so we spent more time reading by the pool and shopping. Bought a few fun, flowing, glittery skirts… despite the awful sounding description they’re actually really pretty and only like 3 pound - I love thai shopping!!!
From Krabi we headed up to the island of Koh Phi Phi, on leaving our hotel in Krabi, Jem had an unfortunate trip up the stairs and plummeted to the floor with backpack on. It wouldn’t have been so bad had our bus not been waiting outside with an audience of tourists watching as she hit the deck, oops!!!
Bruised and battered we continued on our way, the view from the boat was fantastic although I have learned that asymmetric tops in the sun are not the way forward!! We got to Phi Phi and decided we wanted to stay on the quieter beach part - long beach so we
jumped on a little long tail boat to our beach. Unfortunately it was quite choppy so jumping off was a bit more difficult especially when trying to rescue back packs from boat while in waist high waves!
Long beach was nice and chilled out, not too many people to share the beach with but we did find a friend in a wee retriever puppy who decided he wanted to be in the shade so took position under our legs while we sunbathed.
From Phi Phi we headed back to the mainland to make our way across the peninsula to Koh Samui for some more sun worshipping and partying. We had another nice hostel had dinner on the beach most nights which was really nice, especially when there was lightening in the distance illuminating the island. We went out on the beers for the first time in ages, well since Penang which felt like ages. We started in a quietish bar where we packed the shots in and got beaten by a local 8 year old Connect-4 shark. Then we headed onto a livelier club where we continued to drink into the early hours.
After another day of
sunbathing we headed to a Thai boxing match for some blood, sweat and tears. When the first two contenders came out we nearly cried they were only about 8 years old, bless. The contenders started getting a bit older but were still only teens when the first few knock-outs came about which was a bit harsh to watch but they were pretty talented and sportsmanly about it which was cool. Then the contenders started getting a bit beefier and there was Dough boy Vs. Muscle man. Against all the odds dough boy kept coming back at muscle man and knocked him down quite a few times and even took the referee down at one point too which was fun!
The following day we headed to Koh Phangan ready for the full moon party. We had arranged to meet up with Caroline and Sarah, our friends from Oz again for warm up drinks. Warm up drinks turned into drunken oblivion as we downed two buckets of local brew. Local brew turns out to be ½ litre of rum mixed with one redbull and a splash of sprite so as you can imagine it was pretty messy, with several falling over
incidents, a flip-flop incident and Jemma praying to the porcelain god once again, well five times to be exact!! The day of the full moon was purely recovery trying to build ourselves up for another night of drunken behaviour. We headed out about 10 to the beach which by this time was heaving with about 10,000 backpackers, all glowing from body paintings and hobbling from the previous nights 'ring of fire' where in a drunken state they believed they could make it through without third degree burns, silly move!! The party was mental and we managed to meet up with the girls again and some more girls from home. Gi headed home about half two defeated by another bucket, Jem and I partied on in the sand with a new found aussie mate who accidentally head butted me twice, the concussions nearly gone now. About 7am we ventured home after watching the sun rise and realizing we weren’t so attractive in daylight!! We’ve been in a state of hangover since then really…
