We were traveling to our next city,
Phuket Town, and decided to make the voyage by sea rather than by bus. Our plan was to take a boat from Ao Nang to
Koh Phi Phi then another boat from Koh Phi Phi to Phuket. Our first leg of the journey on
Princess Ferry left the port at 9:30; however, our ground transport picked us up at 8:30.
We boarded our boat (ship would be generous) and headed out to sea. Getting out of the harbor was an arduous ordeal. The surf was quite strong that day and boat was breaching as we traversed the coast to pick up more passengers at Railey Beach. Passengers were ferried out on long-tail boats, some of which collided with our vessel seemingly hard. Kristy asked a member of the crew if the remainder of the 2.5-hour voyage would be as rough as the first 30 minutes. The crew assured her that the waters would be much calmer.
Once leaving the Railey Beach harbor, the
Andaman made the crew member a liar. The seas were at least as rough and the only difference was that we seemed to be vectoring head-on into the waves. The boat creaked and
moaned with every passing crest and slammed into each trough. The band of limeys seated next to us overmatched any sounds that the boat or the sea could make. The exclaiming Englishmen did nothing to ease the anxiety experienced by Kristy and Brad when a wave crested over the bow and water splashed into the cabin.
After a long rough ride, we did make it to Koh Phi Phi. Shaken from the journey, we sat at a
McDonald’s to develop a plan. Kristy searched for
air transport off the island, but we settled on finding a bigger ship that would offer a smoother ride to Phuket. We grabbed lunch at a seaside restaurant then hit the beach. Koh Phi Phi has a beautiful calm inlet beach. We calmed our nerves in the sun and sand.
Due to delays caused by the surf we had a short two hours on the island before our next ship departed. We were pleased to see that our next ship, the
Andaman Wave Master, was considerably larger than our first. The leg from Koh Phi Phi to Phuket was still a bit rocky and many people fell ill; however, compared to our first boat ride, we
thought we were riding on glass.
From the pier at Phuket, we took a GrabCar to our hotel,
Tint. Once checked in, we strolled over to the
Indy Night Market for food. We ate a smattering of small eats and Brad had a falafel. Kristy was fried from the journey and we were back at the hotel by 8pm.
