We had an active day planned for today. Tigers, monkeys, optical illusions: what else could anyone want?
We took a GrabCar to
Tiger Kingdom which was about a 20-minute ride from our hotel. The park is in an odd location; sandwiched between a strip of typical Thai shops and a go-cart track. We had to decide on which package to purchase. The tiger is one of Brad’s favorite animals and he naturally wanted to see each cat. Kristy, being more austere, convincingly persuaded Brad to get the “Take One – Big Cat” package. Tigers were classified as smallest, small, medium, big, and El Tigre according to size/age.
Before going into a cage to play with the tigers, we walked around to see all the felines. There were roughly twenty cats on the property. The large males were in enclosures by themselves. The female cats tended to be in cages together. The Tigers were beautiful and mostly docile during our daylight visit. One of the larger males was pacing the fence of his cage following a female cat who was spraying corners. A few of the more active cats impressed us with their speed and agility. Brad would have stayed watching
the kitties all day but Kristy insisted on doing our session with the Tigers and moving along the day.
We went into the big cat cage unknowing of what exactly we would be doing. First, we saw two tigers back a way from the entrance. Our trainer motioned behind us and a cat was laying on a platform on our six. Whoa! Head on a swivel in the tiger cage. We sat with, petted, and posed for pictures with the big cat. After a few pictures, we went over to see Mango who had been lounging in a pool. The trainer shook a toy on the end of a bamboo pool to coax Mango into pouncing out the water. When then went over to meet our third and final tiger. The big feline was sitting on a table and we posed for more pictures. The cats we petted seemed to enjoy the attention. Their fur was quite thick and wiry but felt soft.
After the Tiger Kingdom, we took a taxi to
Monkey Hill which has an appropriate moniker. We were dropped off about two-thirds of the way up the hill. We didn’t really know where to go and
decided to continue our ascent on foot. After a few hundred yards we saw our first monkeys! There were several other tourists feeding the monkeys. We walked around observing and taking pictures. At one point a monkey hopped on Kristy’s back. While the monkey was clutching to Kristy, another monkey (presumably mama monkey) started hissing at Kristy. It was unnerving, but thankfully, the smaller monkey jumped off.
We ate a delicious quick lunch at
Kopitiam By Wilai then went to the
TrickEye Museum. TrickEye has a multitude of murals which are painted to create optical illusions when a patron positions themselves properly. We had fun touring the paintings and taking funny pictures.
In the evening, we ventured to a seafood restaurant that was off the beaten path. The Tom Yum with Shrimp was incredible. After dinner, we turned in for the evening.
