Just want to clock in and let you know that I've landed safely and give you the story so far... The fact that I'm even sending this from Thailand is an achievement in itself... managed to avoid 'bottling it' at the last minute and plucked up the courage to actually get further than my front door this time, although the pissing rain in Glasgow definitely helped. Everything was going ok until I stepped on to plane to realise that a sizeable portion of the arse of Miss Seat 17A (when i say Miss, I mean she was about 80) was spilling on to my 17B... and it's only the 6 hours to Dubai. Well that was the first lesson of my trip: don't judge by appearances, as she turned out to be great craic - exactly ... read more

hey there, isn't that exciting, we're in Thailand, and i've never seen something more beautiful. since we've been to the Cameron Highlands, we met loads of people and we've all travelled together. from there we went to Penang, which we thought would be a lovely tiny island and it was another big city, so we all stayed one night and some of the group went straight to Krabi in Thailand. that night didn't really go well, we had some guests in our hotel called rats and it was really disgusting. i saw one running to the toilets, where one of my friends was, and 5 minutes later she came out completely white, saying that a rat jumped on her knees while she was peeing. charming! things are pretty much the same here, i'm sure everyone must ... read more

We woke up early this morning and went down for a bit of breaky, but i took one mouthful and had to run back to the room...i was sooo sick and it wasn't even a hangover!! Worst of all we then had to catch the bus to the ferry point as we were off to Phi-Phi. Got to Phi-Phi and started to feel abit better, we had a look around and it looked pretty normal compared to the photos after the Tsunami-just noy quite as green as it should be. Sean booked up a 3 day diving course to get his advanced certificate and i planned to go with and do a bit of snorkelling! In the evening we went to a few bars imcluding hippies which it set on the beach..as it was Halloween everything ... read more

Spent a one and a half day in Kanchanaburi, the city of the bridge over the river Kwai. There was an encouraging sign over the road as you entered the city saying: ”Welcome to the land of happiness”. I was readily fooled. Not much to see, i saw. I bridged the River Kwai in an orderly fascinated manner, it was quite a beautiful bridge. But if not in a touristic obligatory mannner, you could also cross it as a meditation over the sufferings of war. This bridge was originally built by allied prisoner’s of war, driven like slaves by the Japanese during the late second world war as a part of the building of the so called death railway(popularised through the novel and later the excelent movie by David Lean ”Brigde over the River Kwai”). Egg 2 After Bangkok, we were intent on going to Chiang Mai, which is in the North of Thailand, to do some trekking and perhaps a cookery course, however when we tried to book the tickets to take us there they didnt have any availability on the trains that suited us. So - we had a quick rethink and decided to head South to the island of Ko Tao instead. Ko Tao means Turtle island and is close to Ko Samui and Ko Phangan where the famous full moon parties take place once a month. The island is renowned for Diving schools, and this is the primary reason for our choice of this destination, as Alan has PADi qualification on his 'I want to do' list. The bus picked us up at our hotel at 5:30am ... read more

Hello again, Koh Phi Phi and Phuket are the two main areas in Thailand that were affected by the Tsunami. We arrived in Phi Phi and the first thing we thought was that it was amazingly beautiful. The affect of the Tsunami can definitely be seen but the natural beauty of the island and the hard work the locals put into getting the island ready again for the season makes it a fabulous island and one of the best we've been to so far. The nightlife is as good as the beauty of Phi Phi though and we partied like crazy here! Our first night out we made good use of a special offer on buckets of whiskey, 2 for 1, so of course being Irish we HAD to drink double! There was a full moon ... read more

Hello all, Spent a day in Bangkok visiting the Wats and riding on tuk-tuks. We also visited Khao San road which is basically a long road full of tourists drinking beer and shopping. We had a Thai meal & headed home as still jet-lagged. On Sunday flew to Ko samui, staying in Bo Phut in a wonderful resort so we're spending the week just chilling out and having thai massage! Yesterday it was raining so we toured round the island and had a ride on the elephants at the sanctuary, the baby ones were gorgeous. Next trip is to Northern Thailand, Chaing Mai so will keep you updated on our adventure. we are cheating by flying up there but I've persuaded mum to get the sleeper train back to the river kwai then onto bkk. I joined ICEMAN and we caught the noon ferry to Koh Toa, and island north of Ko Pangang which is famous for Scuba Diving. Iceman had already reserved a spot at Crystal Dive Resort so after the two hour ferry ride which I spent on the front of the boat, we jumped in a pick up and were welcomed to the resort. Don't let the name fool you, it is a basic joint (no hot water, toilets that you have to manually flush using a bucket) but they have great Dive Masters and Instructors and inexpensive PADI courses. As both Iceman and I had not dove for over 6 months, they made us do a review dive in the pool...it was boring but good to get the cobwebs out before hitting the open water. I signed ... read more

After a ferry -bus-coach-coach again, ferry then minibus ride, we arrived in Koh Samui from Koh Phi Phi. We got a recommendation from some Irish girls we met on Phi Phi for a resort which turned out to be a great one. The resort was on Lamai beach with its own 'Horizon pool' and wasn't too badly priced. The first couple of days were rainy and overcast so we didn't do much. We bought some DVDs and rented a player at the resort. The DVDs are copies but they are rather good quality unless they are new releases currently in the cinema. The last day was the best! It didn't rain and the sun was out so we sat by the pool and had our first go on a jet ski which was fantastic! The water ... read more

Well we were up early this morning ready to catch the bus down to Bangkok as we were making our way to Phuket today! The bus only took a couple of hours and as we had about 5 hours to kill til we had to catch our train to Surat Thani, we decided to catch the sky train into the centre and look around the shops! The train journey down to surat thani actually went really smoothly which was such a relief and we even managed to sleep on there-this time we were in the middle of the carriage completely clear of automatic doors! Once at Surat Thani we had to get a 4 hr bus into Phuket then a taxi into Patong Beach which we shared with the most arrogant isralies ever...it was a very ... read more
