I celebrated New Year initially a day early with the shipyard crew which turned out to be great. Everyone knocked off at 3 o'clock and we had arranged food, drinks and karaoke fun. The boat, shed and surrounds were all cleaned ready for the new year and everything ship shape before we left, not due back until 4th January!
One of the local ladies organised the spread which was impressive, from BBQ fish, chicken, squid, mussels, vegetables, local fish balls, sausages etc. to fried rice, noodle dishes, tom yam and chicken coconut soups, plain rice, veggies, and an array of fruits, it looked fabulous.
Not only did many of the workers come but their families too which was good fun, there must have been around 80 of them. First up was our very own Mr Wan, he was fab singing a couple of traditional songs, followed by another of our boys Dam who also did a great job. Others in our crew were a bit shy but it didn't stop the singing continuing, the kids dancing and singing and it all going until 10 o'clock at night!
As we live in a Muslim area, the food was prepared for them and plenty of soft drinks supplied, only a few of the boys will have a drink (ha ha mainly the machine shop crew) and it made for a good night. Needless to say I did get up for a wee song, firstly joined by Un for Living on a Prayer... then Stand By Me which I'm sure none of them understood, needless to say though I got a round of applause for going up, as you can see by the pictures I was the only foreigner there and one of the few women!
Next night brought celebrations once more in On's Bar, on the way down though I visited a local market and a stage was set up for local events and fireworks at midnight. I mingled through the crowds and I still find it surprising the amount of 'Hello's' I get from locals and well as kids practicing their English... 'What is your name?', 'Where are you from?' etc etc. which I always give them time for conversation but I definitely need to learn Thai!
The buffet was all laid out in On's which was a lovely touch for customers that have supported them this year and I have to say all the
pictures attached are from On's and not my own as my camera wasn't working. Chef 'Sow' did a stunning job of bit size portions of Vietnamese, Chinese, western, local dishes all in taste size portions. I loved the egg wrapped in bacon cocktail sticks and the spring rolls in particular and I must congratulate her on the food.
The night was spent with friends mainly from the shipyard, Reno, Jack, Isaac, Trevor, Dan, Jia, Rick and their partners, drinking, eating and having fun dancing and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed myself. On had organised gifts for all the staff and names were pulled out a glass to see who won what! I was delighted to be asked up to choose a name and picked out on of the young barmen Alex which I was delighted, we often have a wee dance to some strange kinda music and tonight was no different!
We put the sound on the TV up near midnight for the countdown from celebrations at Bangkok, and on wishing everyone happy new year, we dived outside for the celebratory fireworks...
Ahh here's to 2016, I wonder what adventures will lie in store this year!
Needless to say the
dancing continued into the wee small hours, well it wouldn't be new year without it.
So here's to a guid New Year to all my friends and family around the globe, all the very best for 2016, "Lang may yer lum reek'.
