Not much to say about Koh Samui really, it didn't offer much. It was pretty much the same as Koh Phan-gan minus a massive party on the beach. It rained so much whilst we were there and our hotel was pretty much a travelodge, clean though and had air con so could have been worse. Hannah was man down for the two days we were there, bless her, being sick all night and I was feeling pretty home sick, was very different from the friendly resort we stayed on previously and we were feeling quite isolated. We thought ahead this time and booked our travel to Koh Tao the day we got to Samui. We paid a bit extra this time for a catamaran as we were both not ready to face that awful ferry again!! After having a nice afternoon nap we were awoken by an awful racket, turned out to be some bright pink VW camper van which had been converted into a cocktail bar blasting out really annoying repetitive music and it played allllllllll night so this really added insult to injury!!
The next morning we woke up to some sunshine - at last!! We headed down
to the beach and found a couple of loungers which I think we were meant to pay for but didn't...rebels!! There were people trying to sell you so much stuff and I'm sure they have the art of catching your eye down to a tee, you only have to glance at them out of the corner of your eye and they're all over you! We did, however, buy a couple of ice creams from some sweet man who kept walking past us after smiling and waving...I'm convinced I paid him too much or something?! After getting back to our room we later met up with Alex and Louise as they were also in Koh Samui for two nights. After jumping in a cab and going round in a massive circle we finally found them, along with a LOT of rather suspicious looking women, who on closer inspection were definitely ladyboys. Dinner was nice, we had an italian as I think by this point we were all pretty fed up with riceand noodles. Han and I had (another!) early night as I was pretty tired and Han still wasn't feeling 100%
Finally, we left that awful island and were picked
up from our hotel by a coach to take us to the ferry. I have never been so pleased to see a catamaran in my life and when we got on it was air conditioned with tv screens and everything!! Needless to say we had a fast, smooth journey to Koh Tao. Our bags were put in a massive pile at the front of the boat which they unload on to the pier for you to find when you get off. With our bags back on us, I jokingly said to Hannah wouldnt it be funny if there was a little man standing out here holding a board with your name on it and suprise suprise there he was holding a little whiteboard with the words "HANNAH RAVEN" written on it, which was great as yet again we didn't have a clue how we were going to get to our hotel.
The first thing we noticed about Koh Tao is how beautiful it is, finally what we were hoping to find when we came here. Our room is lovely, and although it doesn't have air conditioning it has quite a good fan which does the trick and has no
hot water either!! Koh Tao is a tiny island just north of Koh Phan-gan and its only 21km squared and we are told in the little leaflet that you could walk it if you got up early...so that definitely won't be happening. By the time we were all settled it was about six o'clock which meant only one thing - dinner time!! We had caught sight of a nice looking indian restaurant so thought it would be rude not to go considering it was only round the corner. After stuffing ourselves silly with an "average" curry we took an uncomfortable stroll down to the beach and were pretty speechless when we got there. There is just a long strip of bars with fire-jugglers and people letting off them laterns everywhere. We chilled out on some cushions on the beach witha couple of nice cocktails then headed back to our room.
Day two in Koh Tao and again it was pretty cloudy. Han and I decided to book an excursion which involved snorkelling as I'm not sure I'm brave enough to dive just yet. We are going on a big boat and it takes you to a few different islands and lunch is included which is an added bonus. On our journey down to the travel agents we came acorss the cutest puppy every!! Her name is Snow and she is five weeks old and she wears a little red bow!! The rest of the day was just spent lazing around the pool (until it rained AGAIN!) I managed to take a chunk out of my heel fooling around in the pool as usual. We went to some Aussie bar for dinner which was really nice with two for one cocktails. Yet again we ate too much and were pretty unable to walk so retired to our rooms - we had an excuse for an early night this time though...we were being collected at 8.30 this morning for our boat expedition!
7.15 this morning and we were rudely awoken by lots of rain, and then my alarm went off. We were both sitting there saying "surely the trip won't be going ahead" drifting back off to sleep and there was a very bright flash and the loudest clap of thunder I have ever heard in my life and it was very close!! The thunder and lightening continued for about another twenty minutes but was getting further away thank god!! All I could think about was how tiny the island was and managed to convince myself that something terrible was going to happen!! So after making the decision that there was no way the boat trip could be going ahead as it was still raining at 8 o'clock we both went back to sleep and woke up at ten. Turns out the boat trip did go and the guy collecting us had rang the travel agent lady to see where we were!! Luckily we have been able to change it to tomorrow so we are definitely going to go! Went for an awful lunch which we ended up trying to give away but with no luck. We have pretty much walked one side of the island today but got to a point where there was no more road left so couldnt walk any further.
Hope everyone is all ok, missing you all!! xxx
