On the road, finally!
Kelly chillin on our 2nd attempt to get a bus from Hat Yin to the Koh Samui Ferry Koh Samui - Local Brew : Singha or Chang
To say it was a mission getting to the Island of Koh Samui in Thailand is an understatement. After the 12 hour overnight bus from Kuala Lumpur on which we got no sleep due to Malaysia’s Olympic entry for the 12 hour Snore-athon, and then a couple of hours arsing around at Thailands border control, we finally arrived in HatYin, south Thailand in the pouring rain. Rather than spend a day here we waited for another 4 hours for a bus that would take us to Don Sak then a ferry to Koh Samui where we to meet all our friends/cousins from Leeds and Jersey who were flying over for a 3 week ‘culturally enhancing spiritual migration’, Oops sorry, I mean ‘3 week alcohol induced coma!’
Anyway, the bus arrived and we got on it. Just settling into a quality Nicholas Cage movie (in Thai) and…… the bus broke down. 1 hour later and another bus, we were back on the road, driver with his foot down like Keanu Reeves in/on Speed to get us to the ferry on time, which we missed! We managed to get ourselves onto
All aboard
About to the board the rickety old ferry from the rickety old pier! We struggled to find 'Health and Safety' in the Thai Yellow Pages a cargo ferry instead which did the job and got us to Koh Samui island. Aaaaahhhh at last! At the other side we jumped into a shared minibus and headed to Chaweng beach which is the heart of all the action. On the way there in pitch black, the minibus is straining to climb up a seriously steep hill when, guress what happens?…… The boot flies open and everyones rucksacks and suitcases spill out onto the road, down ditches, into the path of the oncoming traffic. What a day!
So, after a mental couple of days travelling we got ourselves settled in a sound hotel on Chaweng beach next door to the Ark Bar (liveliest spot). Next day we hit the beach. Expecting all the lads from home to be turning up at around 6 or 7pm, we were sat chilling at around 2pm having a few beers with some guys from London. Next thing you know I had to put my shades on sharpish….. Suntan Stan bounces down the beach, whiter than a bedsheet on a Daz Ultra advert (fairplay to him, most of them must have got a ’20 session voucher at Sunbeds4U’ for Crimbo!), closely
View of Don Sak
as we sailed off for Koh Samui followed by SHAME (Ooops sorry, I mean ‘Shane’ who would later be named ‘SHAME’ due to his errr’ extremely friendly nature!!!)
The rest of the lads followed one by one, each of them giving me an earfull due to their lack of food on the flight over (When booking their flights I had to put down a meal preference for each. Temptation got the better of me and I put them down for kids meals/ a Hindu meal/ and a Diabetic meal - sorry lads!). That night was wild. Everyone drinking buckets of SangSom whiskey and Thai Redbull which is illegal in western countries due to its amphetamine content!
Rubber face masks all round (photo attached) from the beach sellers, copious smoking of flavoured tobacco in huge ‘Hukka pipes’, photo’s taken with lizards, monkeys, and young Thai Connect 4 champions who emptied our pockets of cash. Kelly looked at me as if to say “shit pal, 3 weeks with these nutters!?” Time to brace ourselves and hold on tight for a very bumpy ride….
Next stop : Koh Pha Ngan for the Full Moon Party.
