Lamai Beach
View from the beach road at sunset Well it's Sunday late afternoon here and am getting ready to head off out to watch the Liverpool game later. Have not been out this weekend as nearly everywhere has been closed and there has been a strict alcohol ban in force due to the elections here. Apparently it's to stop people canvassing for votes at "drunken parties" (try and tell Charles Kennedy that !!). I have also just found out that i can stay here at the house until Thursday after being told so many different dates, but i am pleased about that anyway.
I leave Thailand on Boxing Day and because of the time difference i arrive back at Heathrow Boxing Day teatime, which is not great but i had little choice because of the availability of flights, and of course there's no bloody trains. I wouldn't otherwise have been able to travel until the end of January and i need to get home for work. I am of course a little fed up about that and not particularly looking forward to spending the New Year in the UK and the cold weather etc, but it is the sensible decision to make and i thought long and hard about
Me and the Aussie
This was taken at the first place i stayed on the mountain side, was sad to see the Aussie leave ! this for the last 2 weeks and this was the correct decision unfortunately.
I leave Samui on the 20th and fly to Utapao and then i travel to Pattaya (am staying in The Sunshine Hotel and Residences on Soi 8 if you want to take a look !) which should be quite an experience, but i am looking forward to meeting up with Jake and it will be really nice to see a friendly face from home. It's not that i am missing home by the way, because to be honest if everything was absolutley fine with work, i would be more likely to extend the time i am spending here instead of cutting it short by a month and a half.I have had 2 good months and one or two ups and downs, the monsoon rains, floods, moving house, communication problems with the UK etc but it's still a wonderful place to be and i have very few regrets other than my poor timing.
Well i went out last night had a few and watched the game, it was quite busy last night and obviously as we near xmas it will get busier and busier. I have been told that xmas here is superb and i don't doubt that. I will be in bangkok xmas day and i won't be having a late night as i have to be at the airport by 6am Boxing day for my morning flight. The good thing is that i only have an hours wait in Abu Dhabi, so i better be on my toes as i usually try my hardest to miss the connecting flight, and invariably i am one of the last ones to board, although i won't be pratting about this time ! (missed one flight already this time !)
Today (Monday) has been extremely hot and my eyes are bloodshot from the dust which is kicked up from vehicles on the roads and i don't wear sunglasses. I have been advised to go to the Doctors but should be rate tomorrow hopefully ! I have had some sort of eyewash solution but the majority of it ended up down my shirt. Still it's better than some of the people i have seen who have had accidents, i saw another one on Friday, again fortunately no one was hurt and then one of the girls who does my laundry was in a state from an accident and she was badly cut and bruised. I think that if you spent a considerable amount of time here it's inevitable that you are going to witness a bad accident, i have only 2 more days on my bike before i leave but i no longer wear a helmet, so perhaps i am as bad as the rest of them.
Not sure what i will do for the rest of the week, i have a few e mails to catch up on and as i said my eyes are that sore that i don't fancy going anywhere but i also don't want to stop in for my last few nights here. I also had another massage today and they are absolutely superb. When the Aussie and myself went to Chaweng the other day, he took me to a place with the unfortunate name of Soi Oily, obviously a 'term of endearment' as oppose to the actual street name. We had a couple of beers and were asked if we would like a "special massage", well we both declined believe it or not. In fact the one thing that sticks out in my mind was this bloody cat that wouldn't leave me alone, kept following me and when i stopped, it would squat over my shoe as if in readiness to have a crap on me. Still i suppose it beats getting divorced when you can get shit on from a great height ! In the end i had to give the cat a friendly but "shot across the bows" kick up the arse and that fortunately solved my little problem.
I liked Chaweng, perhaps more Westerners there but some really nice beach restaurants and you can see why this place is becoming more popular, you don't have to spend a fortune to have a good holiday and there are some superb bungalows to be had for a 1000 baht a night and often less, which is about £15. If you are prepared to spend more the facilities are usually superb and the service to be fair is often as good as or better than anything you would get in Europe, and you have the added bonus of not having to witness 'classy' British women walking round in football shirts !
Anyway on that piss poor note will end now and i look forward to seeing some of you in just over a week !
