Our Spider
Guarding our bathroom Well we’re here on Koh Pha-Ngan, at The Sanctuary, and it may turn out to be just that. It’s pissed down with rain all night, blown a gale and apparently we haven’t seen the half of it yet. There are 4 days forecast with thunderstorms, high winds, the lot. Mike, who runs the place, has said that we’ll be lucky if we make it back to Haad Rin (the beach round the corner) to get our ferry back to the mainland on Friday, so our departure for Chiang Mai may be delayed. Never mind because it is actually very pleasant here. The food here is just about all vegetarian, with a little indulgence for fish eaters, so we don’t have any worries on that score. My cigarette stock is, however, running a little low so I may be quitting sooner than I had planned.
I know I haven’t written anything about Thai culture but that is mainly because we haven’t really encountered it yet, and anyway there are bloggers out there who are much more into that sort of thing than I am. The exception has been the night that we spent in Surat Thani on the way here. That was

In the treetops quite a fun time. We arrived in town after a 6 hour journey and were deposited on a busy street with 2 suitcases for company and were immediately pounced upon by friendly locals only too willing to help us get to where we were going and when we told them the hotel, asked “why you go there?” Well mainly because we had a reservation. After taking an only slightly overpriced tuk-tuk ride to the hotel we freshened up and took a correctly (for ‘farangs’) priced tuk-tuk ride back to the town centre and shipped up in the cutest department store. A combination of (for you english folks) Debenham’s, Kwik-Save, and Wilkinson’s. We were only after a few essentials, you know, Vodka, chocolate, batteries, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, a nail file and oh yes........Hair colourant............as predicted by Rebecca, Barb’s hair is turning..........GINGER!!!!!!! Strangely enough, as we’re in SE Asia, all the colourings were for black hair, so I have a carrot-top for a travelling companion, at least till Oz. Funnily all the other customers in the store seemed to find it hilarious to have 2 farangs in their store, especially as we have no grasp of the Thai language, but they
A Ginger
Snorkeller were all super friendly. Surat Thani is not really a tourist destination, you just stop there while you change trains, ferries etc. Not the prettiest of places, but fun all the same. The only distasteful thing we have seen was 2 english guys out on a date with their potential mail-order brides. The 2 girls looked completely bored by the whole charade, any english woman would have spotted these guys for the losers they obviously were, fortunately the 2 Thai girls had too. Oh well, better batten down the hatches for the impending storm.
Have met a very cute looking lizard around 4ft long, it had a lovely blue tongue which flickered in the sunlight it was only about a foot away, so slow and sweet then someone threw it a chicken bone which was gone in a nano second and it was time for me to swim. This was on a really lovely island somewhere with lovely white sand and really warm sea. Of course had been really good not going out in the midday sun but this day was mega hot, so brilliant, get on a boat at 9am and snokel and get back at 4 making sure

on the beach to sit down first so the suntan lotion disappears from the back of your legs. Luckily the owner of the place we were staying spotted this - must have been difficult not to really and gave me a tube of clear aloe gel which was brilliant. jb is right about the hair colour really bizarre though it did have its advantage it made this spider jump, which was lucky ‘cos it was camouflaged by the rock it was sitting on which is next to the loo, have photo, it ain’t pretty! (the spider and my hair) loo is fine squat variety - now see how men have trouble not spraying everywhere - it’s not the first thing on your mind when you really need to pee. Was really glad only saw spider on day 2 as the electricity here goes off at midnight and of course on the first night I needed the loo at 12.31, which is down a flight of steps and totally separate from the house, never occured to me there was nature so close which is so totally blonde ‘cos the house is in the trees! someone will have to let me know what totally ginger is apart from tragic. Food here is cool plus they make a good white russian, had 2 whilst waiting for my breakfast omelette and garlic toast, which is exactly as it sounds a piece of bread that someone has emptied a garlic press onto. Have had some brilliant indian food for evening meal. Sure I read somewhere - or made it up, that it’s supposed to fend off mozzies, didn’t get a single bite in last place but here they are on patrol! Not sure if we can leave when we are supposed to as rough seas means no boat - even if it did I’m f***** if i’d be on it.
