the whale shark about to eat me!
El tiburon ballena a punto de comerme! On the 2nd of August I finally started my Advanced course. I meet Rhys at the pier at 8.30 to go straight to Nangyuan Island, where i would stay for 2 days whilst I was doing the course. As soon as we had the equipment ready we did the first dive, underwater navigation and how to use a compass. It's a very useful skill underwater as i think it is very easy to get lost down there, so it was a very interesting dive and managed to do a perfect square underwater. Then immediately after we did the underwater naturalist, where i learn about the underwater environment but also some fish identification so that I can finally put names to the fishes and corals (and to the photos). Then that same night I did another dive, the Night Dive. I have to say that this one wasn't my cup of tea, and I was a little bit scared as my mask kept fogging and my torch was not very good, so couldn't see much, so I was afraid of hitting the corals or getting lost. It was an experience but I will stick with day time dives!
The following day was
whale shark
tiburon ballena another of those days that I will never forget in my life. To my first dive, the deep dive, we went to Chumpon Pinneacle. Rhys and I where the first ones to get into the water when suddenly everybody on the boat started shouting as there was something big in the water very near us. As soon as i put my mask and regulator and went down, I saw it....a big whale shark!!!! It was amazing and scary at the same time, but as I knew they only eat plancton, I knew I was safe. He or she swam around us for a while and a couple of times came straight towards me and managed to get a really good photo and get away without being eating or hit by him/her. After this nothing will be the same underwater. It was an amazing experience (yes, another one!!!!They keep happening and hope will continue!!) Then when the whale shark swam away we finally did our deep dive to 30 m, with not much visibility. He asked me to do a game test and then up again, ensuring we did our safety stop (the divers will know what I mean). Then when

tiburon ballena we were about to get out of the water the whale shark appeared again for a short time. So twice in a day, incredible!!!! Rhys has done more than 400 dives here in Koh Tao and never seen one...until today of course, so we were very very lucky! Then for our last dive of the course, the Underwater photograply we went to Mango Bay. All good but not as exciting as seeing a whale shark. We had a videographer with us, so I've got a DVD with the images of the whale shark nearly eaten me!! ha ha ha on the way home.
