On the 2nd of August I finally started my Advanced course. I meet Rhys at the pier at 8.30 to go straight to Nangyuan Island, where i would stay for 2 days whilst I was doing the course. As soon as we had the equipment ready we did the first dive, underwater navigation and how to use a compass. It's a very useful skill underwater as i think it is very easy to get lost down there, so it was a very interesting dive and managed to do a perfect square underwater. Then immediately after we did the underwater naturalist, where i learn about the underwater environment but also some fish identification so that I can finally put names to the fishes and corals (and to the photos). Then that same night I did another dive, ... read more

The deep dives were around a pinnacle far from land, so large schools of barracuda, tuna and trevally were passing by, intermittently being picked off by eight 1.5 meter grey reef sharks. One of the other divers got some great shots and movies with his underwater camera of sharks circling us, so J hopes to post those soon. It may have been the nitrogen narcosis, but the sharks were more beautiful than scary; ... read more

We spent Christmas of 1997 on Koh Nangyuan, a small resort of 3 islands connected by sandbars. It was time to return after 9 years. We were astonished to find a dock large enough to support the Lomprayah catamaran from Samui. On our first visit, we took a speedboat to Koh Tao, an intermediate sized boat from there to just outside of Koh Nangyuan, and then a long-tailed boat onto the beach of Koh Nangyuan. J's Grandma was a real trooper through all of the boat transfers on that trip! The rooms are in their own huts dotting the hillsides of the 3 islands; ours had a great view of the sea. Electricity on the island is turned off between 10 AM and 4 PM so those hours are spent out on the beach. During the ... read more
