We wanted to give the West Coast of Thailand one last chance so we headed one hour south to Koh Lanta where we have been told by many many people and our guide book is THE place to see some amazing sunsets. We got there and got a free lift with a woman who was on our boat advertising her place, Lanta Sunny House, it was bungalows 50m from the beach for 500B, wishing it was cheaper but knowing we’d have trouble getting cheaper, we went with her. Our bungalow was to be fair nice and had a massive balcony which became very handy.
We immediately headed out to see what the beach was like and to be honest weren’t overly impressed, with lush pictures still in our minds of Bottle Beach back on Koh Phangan. It was lovely though, really long with clear turquoise sea which actually felt like a bath when you jumped in. We couldn’t make out why we weren’t blown away by this place, maybe it was because it was full of Scandinavian families (not that we have anything against Scandinavian families) it was just that there wasn’t really any travellers around just families. Plus, we
are not sure what nationality they were but one nationality loved doing exercise on the beach in their beach wear (bikinis for woman) which G pointed out can’t be good for their boobs, where’s the support she said, they’ll be down by her knees in a few years if she keeps doing that!!!!
Anyway we had a beer on the beach then headed back as it started to rain, it pretty much rained for the rest of the evening, so no fantastic sunset!!!! We had a wonderful Thai meal in a lovely little place by ours before stopping by the local off licence and purchasing a 2 litre bottle of red wine for 500B, a bargain when a beer is 120B a bottle!!!! Can you tell we’re counting the pennies now!!!???
The next day we managed to spend a few hours on the beach chilling out, T getting rather bored of the whole beach thing now, before it proceeded to chuck it down again, this stayed the same for pretty much the rest of the day with major thunder storms around us. We managed to sit on the beach for a beer to watch the invisible sunset but
the lightening around us took our mind of the fact that we hadn’t seen one of these amazing sunsets.
Our last meal in Thailand we got a great deal, buy 2 meals get one free, so we had spring rolls to start followed by two yummy red curries all washed down with a beer then of course our red wine!!!!
All in all we enjoyed Thailand but we feel it no longer has the “traveller” feel to it like the rest of South East Asia, it is really westernised and takes some good hunting to find places that aren’t lined with booming bars. We didn’t get to go down to the deep south to a collection on islands called Ko Tarutao National Park where we have heard is meant to be amazing but with the weather being like it was in Koh Lanta, ironically the none monsoon side at this time of the year, we decided to head straight into Malaysia. The exchange rate isn’t fairing well at the moment for travellers either with 1 pound being 50B where most people we’ve talked to when they all last came, some even last year, it was about 70B which
makes a massive difference when buying a beer, getting accommodation and transport. The up side to this was we enjoyed so many more places than we didn’t enjoy which made it good all round.
