Koh Lanta, what a great little island! I've been here now for nearly two weeks and yesterday decided that I would stay for another week or so. It will mean I need to do a quick 'visa run' later this week to the border to get it renewed but I figured why rush onto the next place when I'm having such a great time here.
Koh Lanta is located south of Phuket (near Pi Pi) on the Andaman coast. Its a relaxing island where people seem to go to get away from the other more commercial party islands in the region. Most of the tourists here appear to be from Sweden for some reason (which I'm not complaining about either!) and it also has some really good scuba diving sites nearby. It actually reminds me of the other one I was on a few weeks ago (Ko Chang) and is a well kept little secret. Now when I say little secret, were still talking lots of accommodation and big international style resorts spread over a number of different beaches, but Koh Lanta has a more laid back and relaxed feel to it.
I've been lucky enough to stay in
more bamboo huts only 50m form the beach and its still only costing me about AUD$12 a day for accommodation. For the first 10 days I stayed at a placed called Funky Fish on Long Beach but yesterday decided to move to a new hut just nearby on the same beach. It was the same price as the other one but a little bit nicer and hopefully less little animals wondering around at night (see the pics attached, I took them over the last few days in my old hut). For example my new one actually has a flushing toilet which sounds like a simple thing but most of the places over hear (in the budget end of town anyway) have bucket of water next to the toilets which you have to kind of self flush yourself. Also this new one has a fan which you don't really need at night time but it helps during the day if your around.
The average temperature is about 28-30 degress every day and drops to around 21 degrees at night which makes for a very comfortable (and lazy) day. As you would expect there is the usual parties on every night
I have been having some more of those late nights lately were I don't seem to get into bed until 3-4am. Once again I have been meeting some cool people and sharing travel stories over a beer as the sun goes down each day. Yesterday I hired a motor bike and went for a cruise down the coast with a nice girl I met from California. There’s a big national park down the bottom of the island and some nice quite beaches. It was a fun day and a good chance to get out and about for a change. Lately I have been confined to how far I want to walk up and down the beach etc. I think I'll keep the bike for a few more days and check out a bit more of the island.
You'll also notice I have uploaded a couple of short movies. They are both of 'fire shows' and they are literally on every night (most of the islands have them) at the bars on the beach. The local Thai guys that do them are amazing and i've even seen kids as young as 5 doing it (and better than some of the
adults I might add). These guys have no fear and love a crowd.
Koh Lanta is definitely a place I'll come back to again one day for another holiday, I recommend it to all!
Cheers, Lanta Dog.
