Before leaving the town of Pai, we visited the Pai World War II Memorial Bridge. The bridge was erected in 1942 and used by the Japanese to transport weapons and provisions to Myanmar (Burma) during World War II. The bridge was built entirely by American POW labor. As the story goes, after the construction was completed, all American POWs were marched down to the river bank and executed. The original bridge was washed away by flooding in 1973, but it was rebuilt by the locals and used for quite some time after that.
