We've been up to quite a lot here in Chiang Mai since escaping Bangkok. We took a Thai cooking course, which was great. Apparently, I'm an awesome cook! We also went and saw a ladyboy cabaret one night (you would've loved it Tim!) The real highlight of the trip so far was the jungle trek we just finished - one of the best things I've ever done. We spent three days and two nights hiking through the jungle, swimming in waterfalls, riding elephants and bamboo rafting. At night we stayed in hill tribe villages in bamboo huts - very rustic but it wouldn't have been the same any other way. We had a guitar, campfires, and many bottles of thai whiskey each night (once again, sorry mom). We had the greatest people in our group, met ... read more

Back in Chiang Mai again, last week I started a thai massage course, its going well but its very tiring and hard ...my brain almost exploded last week as we were taught about 134 positions in 5 days. This week I am practising and trying to get better at it. Probably gonna stay here next week, depending on my performance and enthusiasm. ... read more

So the best part of travelling in Northern thailand has to be the scorpions. We were in a place called Pai, pronounced "Bye," a helpful peace of information before trying to book a bus ticket there, about 30km from the Burmese border. We were making our way along a path beside the river toward our bungalow. It was pitch black and close to midnight. We'd spent the evening outside a supermarket in this one horse town talking to a few travellers, listening to their tales of woe. Being ripped off, having money and passports stolen on government buses, seeing balaclava-clad burmese rebels carrying ak-47's, motorcycle accidents and multiple mosquito bites. We were feeling quite superior on the walk home along the river bank. None of those things had happened to us yet. What were we doing ... read more

Hello!!! I'm back in steamy Bangkok after a most marvelous adventure through the mountains of Northern Thailand. Four days in the jungle passed more quickly than you can imagine! Left Chiang Mai in the early morning with only a day pack. Read: one change of clothes, flip flops, my journal, swimsuit and a sarong. Stopped at a market in the last town to buy fruit and water before heading into the jungle. Drove for 3 hours in the back of a pick-up truck, uphill, to get to the base camp. That's where we dined on rice and green oranges before beginning the trek. We hiked for about 4 hours, uphill, to the first hilltribe village. A local man, named Naan was our guide. He pointed out interesting flowers, insects and other edible jungle delights. I ate ... read more

Sawasdee Krup! I've learned a few new things on this trip already. 1. What heat rash feels like 2. That everyone's a scam artist Wow. Three days in 38 degrees celcius -- in a dirty rotten polluted city -- is quite enough for me. I've developed this lovely and itchy heat rash (I am HOPING that's what it is) from being soaking wet (from humidity) the entire time I've been in BKK. My hair is COMPLETELY out of control. I now understand why people in hot countries get dreads. It happens involuntarily! I've never experienced heat and humidity like this. I can't sleep, I can't eat... (been living off of fruit shakes -- blended mango, pineapple, papaya!) Never thought I'd crave that cold NS ocean breeze... That being said, I am now in Chiang Mai -- ... read more

Hi everyone! It's scavenger hunt time! I'm in Chiang Mai right now, and we're doing a day long scavenger hunt! The hunt ends tonight at 8:30 at a drag show in the Night Market...very fitting. There are many ways of gaining points, but out of all of them I really want to see the statue of Queen Victoria in the Foreign Cemetery--not only for points, but because Queen Vicki was just so awesome and bizarre at the same time. Someone who ruled the British Empire, mourned for over 12 years for her husband, and didn't set foot in public for almost that long probably needed therapy. You have to give her credit for being a real hard ass just to keep going. I hope when I see her statue that I will "think of England." If ... read more

Here are more fun facts about Thailand! 1. You will discover more new and exciting fruits than you ever imagined existed. Jack fruit and mango steen anyone? 2. If you can pee in a squat pot on a moving train without wetting yourself, you can pee anywhere in the world. 3. Trains rock my socks. Literally. 4. Despite the ungodly heat, Thais wear jeans, sweaters, longs sleeves, and coats. After thousands of years of evolution, the Thais have a super human like quality that allows them to stand heat really well. 5. If you like and/or can eat seafood, you're in like Flynn. ... read more

After suffering a 30 year secret war while the world's eyes were on Vietnam; enduring the most sustained bombing campaign in history (leaving most of the land unusable due to unexploded ordinance); experiencing ongoing skirmishes between Royalist Hmong Rebels and the Pathet Lao Government; and being heavily reliant on foreign aid with no real industry; you'd forgive the Lao people if they occasionally wanted to walk around with a frown on their face. But these are the most outwardly happy and friendly people I've ever met while travelling. I spent the best part of the last 2 weeks travelling in Lao's Northwest from Luang Prabang, before entering northern Thailand for a few days of partying (so far) in Chiang Mai. By far the experience of the trip so far was the 8 hour slow boat trip ... read more
