Thai cover band
"1, 2, 3.... i'm the motherf$$$kin B. I. G..." Ok, I have to share the following story before I update you on my travels. My last night in Phuket I went out with a couple locals to the "Jammin' " reggae bar. Yellow, Red and Green everywhere- on the Thai workers clothes, lighting the bar, on the stage. A all Thai coverband was the nights entertainment.... and they were suprisingly good! They opened with Coldplay's "In My Place" and played everything from disco to hip hop and it was quite surreal.
So I have to share the following story... I'm still laughing out loud when I think about it.
After a couple drinks I hit the men’s room….. which was the typical small size for Thailand. And so I head to the urinal to do my thing. All of a sudden I feel this warm, wet cloth on my neck and I turn around to find this small Thai man behind me smiling… after a moment he says “You can pee now”..... “But I can’t pee now like this” I said. He left for a couple moments so I could in fact pee.
I head to the sink and begin to wash my hands and all the
Checkers
Thai taxi drivers play checkers at the bus station in between trips sudden I feel this guys hands on my back giving me a Thai massage. What??!! It actually felt really good so I kinda just smiled and kept washing. Ok, So I’m thinking this is the bathroom attendant. Got it… Very nice… usually in the states they give you a mint of something.
He hands me another towel to dry my hands, and before I can put it down he begins a chiropractic manipulation on me. Picture this... this 5 foot Thai man is grabbing me around the chest and picking me up to crack my back, then shoulders, then neck. The adjustment was suprisingly good. At this point i'm holding back my laughter... I stumbled to find some money to tip him. I returned to my friends and laughed out loud for a couple minutes. They said this is normal for men's (but not women's) bathrooms in nice places!!! Ha ha. Only in Thailand.
Yesterday was a long travel day… after a morning bus never showed I spent 2 hours at the Phuket bus station. The highlight was a wonderful breakfast ($1) of a fried egg, and chicken with red curry over rice with a plate of some fresh
Late night snacks
Usually in Thailand they eat you, but now... you can have it the other way around thai vegetables- snake beans, lettuce, and aborigine eggplant (REALLY small). One of the peculiarities of Thai cuisine is that they eat the same types of food for breakfast as any other meal… and its actually really great (If you love Thai food of course).
After flying almost 1,000 miles north of Phuket I arrived in Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city. I met Ido (pronounced “ee-dough”),an Israeli guy just out of the army, in the airport and we ending up hitting the town last night. After drinks and pool we were headed back to the hostel, when out of no where a Thai girl came running at me saying “You eat this”… fortunately I asked what it was before ingesting the fried worms. You see, there was this motorcycle driving around with a glass case full of deep fried insects, a local delicacy. Yum or eew.. you decide.
We followed this girl and a pack of farang (non-Thai) she had rounded up to a nearby bar. Outside a large computer printed sign read “No Lady Boy” and from this I knew what to expect inside- Tons of drunken, nasty farang with hordes of young thai girls fighting for
Cooking
At the cooking class. Previously I had starting a raging fire at my little station... which almost gave the Kiwi girl next to me a heart attack. their affections…. err…. Money. It was amusing for a little while at least, blaring hip hop and the thai girls buying drinks for the farang in hopes they’d take them home. Another sign inside read “No sex with under 15 year girl, this rape Thailand”. Over the music Ido and I were speaking Hebrew, laughing at the whole scene. After the Thai girl was beginning to scare me a bit, I snuck out @ 2AM for some noodle soup (60 cents) across the street and hit the sac.
Today I took a Thai cooking course. It was fantastic. A small group of us from all over the world got instruction for 6 hours in making a variety of Thai cuisine. We made 5 dishes in all ourselves, and got to eat them too! The highlight was Chicken Panang (red curry and cocunut, this has become my favorite dish) and sticky, sweet rice with fresh mango. Yum, Yum, Yummy Panang in my tummy. I may take another one-day course later on in the week… so that I’m sure to know how to make this stuff when I return home.
Ido and I found a beautiful, brand new guesthouse to
Cat
A kitten playin' around during our break at the cooking school stay in. It’s all wood construction, perhaps something like a dark cherry color… there is a huge common room with couches, two full bathrooms and a bedroom for each of us with a fan. All for $7.5 each. Believe it or not, everything is EVEN cheaper up here in Chiang Mai. Thanks to all who made sure I came up here.
Tomorrow I will either be going farther up north to the town of Pai, or going on a 3-day trek through the region. Haven’t decided yet.

less yackin and more crackin
It's good to know that Uncle Eddie can make a living in Thailand mens rooms if things don't work out in Cali. Maybe Susan can sell deep fried bugs. Where are you now?
