It is exactly 2 weeks and two days until I board that plane home. Looking behind me I see 12months filled with amazing, weird, and hilarious memories. Ahead of me lies the next chapter: Sol Fest, University and life in Glasgow. I still find it hard to comprehend all the happenings, the ups, the downs and the craziness of this year… That first time we walked into this house we were pasty-skinned, sweaty, and unnerved at the thought of teaching 700 kids a week for the rest of the year. We had been sharing the same, hard bed and had only known each other for a week. Now I regard Ben as one of my best friends and cannot imagine doing any of this without him. That’s not to say things have always been easy. We ... read more

Friday, 11.15am. I sit staring at the blank screen which is my blog, distracting myself with the sound of the wind rattling the shutters and sending the door banging open. Smoke starts to fill the house so I close them. Around this time the farmers burn their dead crops to prepare them for the new. Five minutes later and I am coughing from the thick haze of smoke now sitting in our living room. I go outside to check what has happened and in front of me, inches from Pi Noi’s house, a wall of fire is blowing out of control and towards our house. No dangers of that here! I have successfully bribed M3 into speaking English with fruit Mentos. Their lust for sweets means most are actually attempting to speak English rather than whisper it to themselves. M1 are a real mix. Some classes are powering ahead, keeping me on my toes as to what lessons I need to plan. Thankfully this is the majority of students and ... read more

It’s another scorching Tuesday morning and we’re outside wishing the king a happy birthday. Ben and I are standing alongside the rest of the school in front of the King’s portrait. I feel beads of sweat dripping down my back like a broken tap and Ben’s strained face tells the same story. As we slowly cook in our suits, I dream of how you must be having it back home with snowy blizzards and an actual need for clothing. This lasted for an hour before returning to a cold shower and a promise never to be suited up in the blazing 35 degree heat. Tuesday was a public holiday so joined Claire, Robyn, Stephen, and Pra Yung, we headed for a waterfall whose name escapes me. Unlike the openness of Pha Diem, it fell deep into ... read more
