Thai Private Home Cooking
Live frogs at On Nut market Wednesday 27th March, 2013
Finally today we were heading out to the burbs of Bangkok to do the first of two planned cooking sessions with Angsana at 'Thai Private Home Cooking'.
I'd found it on Tripadvisor and after many emails back and forth between Angsana and I, we'd come up with two menus to cook over two sessions - today and then another one in April after returning from Koh Phangan.
We took a taxi from Nouvo Hotel where we staying (near Khao San Rd) to Rachethewi train station and then the 45 min train trip to On-Nut station. We had arranged to meet Angsana across the road outside McDonalds before she took us to the local market before starting our cooking. Whilst waiting we found a local little street-side coffee stall where we ordered a nice 'wake-me-up' iced coffee!
Angsana was right on time and we headed straight to the market. Here we purchased all of our food for our session as well as saw many interesting sights such as frogs, turtles etc. Apparently the turtles aren't for eating (thankfully) but for good luck to release back into the wild. (not sure if I believed this

Live catfish... One of these will soon end up on our plate! but so hope it's true)
We both hit it off with Angsana straight away and knew we'd be in for a great morning of cooking!
We headed back to her house nearby and were thrilled to find out we were the first guests to be cooking in her new home! We also met Angsana's mum who'd be helping out with washing up etc (and eating with us!)
On the menu today was:
Gung obb woosen - Steamed glass noodles with prawns Yam pla duk foo - Deep fried fish with green mango sauce Pet sauce makham - Roasted duck breast with tamarind sauce Phat pakbung moo grab - Stir-fried morning glory with crispy pork belly We loved everything about our session - we prepped everything from start to finish (not usual for even hands on cooking classes - usually everything is already chopped etc just waiting to be cooked) and Angsana only guided us. Both Angsana and her mum joined us to eat our delicious meal (after inviting them too - way too much food for just Mia and I to eat!).
We came back on the 17th April for a

Turtles... They don't eat them, just keep them for good luck! new session after returning from a very wet couple of weeks on Koh Phangan :-(
Although I can't find our photos from the second session, this is what we cooked:
Khao tang naa tang - Rice chips with pork and coconut dip Hor mok talay - Steamed curry fish, shrimps and squid in banana leaf wraps Gaeng pet pet yang - Roasted red duck curry yam som-o - Pomelo salad with minced pork and prawns Khao Niew mamuang - Mango with stick rice What an amazing two sessions we had! We'll definately be back for more next time we are here in April 2015!
