Today we got up bright and early and went to a floating market about an hour and half from Bangkok. The market is the oldest of its kind in Thailand was apparently built by the Chinese. When we went it was just for tourists - locals come and shop at the market between 5 and 730 am. We were not there that early. The market was really cool - lots of canals and goods for sale. But a huge tourist trap. If you stop for a few minutes you are immediately harassed by someone selling something.
In the afternoon we went to another temple called Wat Pho - or temple of the reclining Budda. Really Cool! and HUGE! Lots to see there. Also, Wat Pho is home to a massage school. Clearly, I (Sarah) needed to indulge. At about $10 for an hour massage, how could I not? It was amazing. Not like a massage in North America. It is very....physical. They stretch you and move you and pretty much crack every joint that they can. Afterward I felt amazing! I (Andrew) spent this hour
dealing with Tuk-Tuk drivers and, eventually, deciding to retreat back into Wat Po for another walk around. It proved to be a good call as I got to witness a procession of monks enter this big temple. Towards the end of the procession there was a very old monk who was wheeled up half way in a wheel chair, then to be helped up the temple steps by younger monks. The other onlookers (Thai) knelt before him to show their respect... Very cool.
We decided to walk back to our hotel because there was a lot of traffic. Also it was sunny 😊 - but very very very hot. We ended up walking through this really cool market that was NOT geared to tourists. Got some great buys! Sarah bought $3 canvas sneakers and Andrew a belt for $1.50! Can't go wrong. Also, for lunch we had amazing street food - Pad Thai. Also for about a dollar a plate! mmmmmmmmmm
Waded through the evening downpour to grab some dinner and watch some world cup soccer tonight...
Off to Ayutthaya tomorrow. Thanks for all the comments, love to hear from everyone!
ps. No coasters yet, but
some will come for sure. And the dinner was red curry with chicken and steamed rice. Tasty.
