We were up, ready and at Khao San Road by 10am. The markets were great, sold loads of fake stuff, we got some Bilabong flipflops & a maxi dress for El. Had a fruit smoothy watching the wrold go by, it's different to being on holiday when you always have to be somewhere or catching some rays. Accross the road from the cafe they were selling fake driving licences, diploma's, degree's and PADI diving licences! We also spotted a massage parlour selling fish footmassages - the sign said let our fish kiss your toes and feed on your dead skin - gross! Is that just for wierdo's with foot / fish fetishes?
Ended up at a market that only the locals go to, selling second hand shoes and scruffy toys. We were the only English people there and got stared at which was uncomfortable, but an interesting experience, even if it just pushed us out of our comfort zone.
Some people tried to sell us bird seed and there were swarms of pidgeons in the sky that started hurtling towards us. I was hunched over with my head in my hands screaming like a baby! Everytime I looked up I just
imagined the bomber planes in Pearl Harbour.
Saying that we're a lot more confident and street wise today, and have been able to say no to the TukTuk men and avoid sketchy situations. Spent nearly two hours in a taxi getting back to the hotel to meet Tom & Coatsy - we got lost which shouldn't have been suprising since the driver had a cataract in one eye and used a magnifying glass to read the address with the other. During this two hour journey we noticed how the majority of Bangkok is really well kept, and everyone takes such pride in their cars, they're imaculate. If I had a Thai Baht for every person who warned us not to stay too long (as we'd hate the fog, smells and dirt) then I'd be able to buy the Emerald Buddah! I'd have to disagree though, we love it here. Yes you do get the odd bad smell, but as for fog and dirt - it's no different to London.
Finally made it to the hotel & went for a swim on the rooftop terrace with Tom & Coatsy. Had a lovely Thai meal out, we passed a man begging face
down on the road with no legs which was sad. Ellie wondered if he was faking it, hmmm I don't think thats possible El!
Caught the overnight train from Bangkok to Suret Thani, bought some beers and located seats. We'd booked first class sleeper cabins and our rooms joined up with an inside door to make one room, it was ace! The waitress serving drinks on the train kept flirting with Tom which was entertaining, he tipped her 500THB (about a tenner) so she'd definitly seen him coming! We had a giggle with the Venom suction kit, and Tom ended up wearing Ellie's dress and my headband, what a wopper! We made up an excellent drinking/card game & wrote the rules on Tom's back, had a few games of that and fell asleep by midnight.
