Jim Thompson
Needs no (shouldn't) explanation. So back to the Jim Thompson Museum!
Jim Thompson was an American architect who was stationed in Thailand during the Second World War. Supposedly he loved the country so much that after returning to America at the war’s end, he soon moved to Thailand permanently. He opened a silk manufacturing business, and made it rich. He enjoyed exploring the country, and the story goes that one day when walking outside (did I mention he had money?), he simply disappeared. His house (which was already open to the public during his residence there) was then turned into a museum because of all the art pieces he had collected over the years, and the overall design of his property and its buildings.
Well, it was definitely worth it! Such a beautiful home! It was like a little compound, with its own tiny forest and several servants’ quarters. He had put previously existing buildings together to create a more western home, making for some great looking spaces. As for the art, he had collected paintings, furniture and sculptures from all over the country, creating an extensive collection.
Hillary and I then had lunch on the property, and started making our way
Entrance
Entrance to the Jim Thompson Museum. back to the hostel. It had been a long day, so we decided to give public transportation a try, which was the Sky Train. Very nice system! Clean, modern and easy to use. It was also a great way to get a better look at the city. One thing you notice about Bangkok when you’re zipping through the neighbourhoods like that, there is a lot of construction! Everywhere you look, something is in some stage of construction. I’m sure it makes for a lot of jobs for the locals.
Once back, Hill and I were exhausted. So exhausted in fact that we napped for the next 4 hours! I was writing up one of our blog entries, so I didn’t sleep as much, but in the end we both woke up around 9pm. Shocked about how we had just lost the entire afternoon, we decided to take a nice walk around and grab a bite to eat. What kind of traditional Thai food do you think we had? Was McDonalds’ the first thing that came to mind? lol It wasn’t for us either, but there wasn’t too much of a selection at that hour. Not to mention Hillary’s cousin
Garden
The garden inside the property of the house. had given us the advice not to eat street meat too late in the day, since there may be a chance it’s been sitting there awhile. lol
So how was it? Pretty good. McDonalds seems to have a little more class in other places around the world. They might be trying to modernize their image. Most McDonalds’ have a McCafe somewhere in the restaurant, which usually serves coffee, tea, desserts and other café style foods. Pretty fancy stuff (well, compared to what we Canadians have). lol After some food, we did a little browsing through the market, and called it a night. Just because we had a long afternoon nap, didn’t mean we still weren’t feeling tired. lol
