New Years with a Bang

Hey all. I hope everone's new yrs went off with a bang like ours. In case u hadn't heard, Bangkok was the scene of 8 bombs new yrs eve and like many foreigners here in Bangkok, we were oblivious to the fact. Earlier in the night I saw what I thought to be drug sniffing dogs patroling Khao San Rd and an increased police presence to keep the peace in case things got out of hand. Nothing out of the ordinary. Just after midnight, we heard what we thought were fireworks but couldn't see any. Thought nothing of it. But the next morning when a friend asked about the bombs in Bangkok, I thought he was joking. Around here, people went on as if nothing had happened. I told dad, he shrugged it off and then I thought it best to keep it from mom before she had tix booked on the next plane. Security was beefed up and all has been well since... Just a little New Year excitement.

So mom and dad are gone back to Canada and Hye Young and I are on our own again. We almost changed our travel plans due to some travel agents who said Hye Young couldnt get a Vietnam visa. We tried 3 agents and they told us the same thing. So we were starting to change our plans to travel with our Irish friends to Myanmar and India for our remaining part of our trip. Go west instead of east. But we decided to go to Vietnam Embassy ourselves and see what's up. Nothing was up. No problems. One day later, we have our visa. Maybe, the travel agents think she's North Korean and has a nuke in her backpack. That was their explanation... sorry but North's nuke crisis... So we are finally leaving Bangkok (after 5 movies in 3 days...we were bored) for Cambodia, Vietnam and then Laos. so we will post later
