We ended up getting the afternoon off yesterday (although we haven’t really been ‘on’ enough yet to warrant use of the word ‘off’). One of our colleagues, Off (who according to Thai custom must be addressed as Pi - pronounced ‘pee’ - Off) had promised me that I could play in the teachers versus policemen football match in the last period, a fascinating prospect that I was sadly denied due to cancellation. We drove home, as seems to be the daily routine, with Mr Na Long Chai and his wife, who seemed vexed about something, and on the way we stopped at a restaurant and met a man who smelt strongly of alcohol and who may have been somebody’s relative. Again, our dismal grasp of Thai meant it was difficult to interpret the conversation - somebody ... read more

This first entry comes from the Soundlab of Klongnamsai Wittayakarn High School, the improbably-named place in which we are spending the next four weeks as volunteer English teachers. To give you a bit of context, we’ve spent the last two weeks marauding around Laos, where our most strenuous activity involved floating down a river in an inflated rubber ring, supping dirt-cheap Beer Lao and occasionally stopping to hurl ourselves into the water from impossibly tall and rickety wooden structures on rope swings, trapezes and zipwires. For this reason, the return to some semblance of routine has been something of a kick in the teeth, if not a full-blown haymaker to the jaw. Our volunteer experience was presaged by an overnight rail journey from Vientiane to Bangkok, most notable for the fact that seemingly the entire staff ... read more

So dann... Also... die ... read more

Yesterday after trying to find a bus out of Ayutthaya to the border and having no luck, we decided to head back to Bangkok via train the next day to catch a train to the border. So we paid our fifty cents (US) and got to Bangkok within about an hour and a half, then grabbed some lunch at good ole KFC, our last taste of fast food for a while, and hopped on a 5 1/2 hour train for only $2! The train ride was hot, dusty, and smoky (due to the burning trash and fields). We looked like coal miners by the end of it thanks to all the ashes and smoke, hopefully we don't end up with black lung. Luckily we got on early in Bangkok and were able to have seats for ... read more

After too much sleep on saturday night we coul;d not get a wink of sleep on sunday. Very unfortunate as we had to leave our hostel aty 5am to get the first train out of bangkok to the border town of Aranyaprathet. It was an exciting start to the day and we were shocked how the city really doesnt sleep. Teams of people were flooding off the sleeper train to start work in the capital. Anyway we found our 3rd class train at a cost of 80p each and we settled in for our 6 hr journey. It was a good move getting the train not only for the price but the amasing views and the close proximity to ordinary Thai folk. We breakfasted on the train from the fresh food sellers walking up and down ... read more

Here i am on the Cambodian border, havign had very little sleep over the last two nights, and not really knowing where I am going in Cambodia. I arrived in Bangkok last night, extremely tired after a 16 hour bus journey overnight from Songkhla. I decided to head for Chinatown, and to do it on public transport (no tuk-tuk, moto-bike or taxi for me). I made it there having done lots of asking questions of Thai people, many people being very kind. The guesthouse I wound up in is called the River View, and it's fantastic. The views over the river are amazing, particularly as the sun goes down. Sa, when you come out we're definitely going here With every fibre in my body crying out for sleep, I forced down some coffee, had a much ... read more
