26th Feb – We got up at 0600 to go to an Island. We went there is a canoe. It was made out of wood and this man paddled. It cost 200 Rupees (1.00 GBP) there and back. At the island there was a big jungle, and we were surrounded by palm trees. There were enormous leaves bigger than my head. We walked through rivers and a local village. It was really noisy with bird sounds and music from the houses. We were careful not to get bitten by leeches. Sophie

Today I went whitewater rafting where I did Grade 2 and 3 rapids. It was very fun because it was so rough that I got covered with water. There were big drops and small drops. I liked the big drops best because they had a big splash at the bottom. After, we went in the slowest tuk tuk in the world to the train station. When I went into the train station a man showed us to the signal box that was full of big levers. When we went back I walked over the train track that was very old (don’t need to say this but that is very dangerous). Jonathan

Boxoffice Facts, not the River Kwai but the Kelani but it was this location, which was used for the filming. Apart from the odd bit of iron work, the bridge is long gone although the train is still at the bottom of the river. The hotel where we stayed was used by the actors and film crew.

Boys and trains, with the help of Sunil our tuk tuk driver from the Adam’s Peak attempt, we found our way into the station master’s office and signal box at Hatton Station. The train journey took us to Nanu Oya then we took a local bus to Nuwara Eliya.

ciao!
Hi Richard (and of course your family!) I see you are having great fun and enjoying your dream vacation far from European troubles...I imagine anyway how you are missing exiting Farnborough...:-) Great to see your blog, just a suggestion, next time your family decides to go for Pizza, please ask them to be patient and come to visit me in Rome when you will be ready for next adventure! Something in Italy will remind you about this wonderful trip (e.g. trains?), but at least you will get the best pizza in the world... Ciao, Marco
