6000+ Hey Harry and family, glad you liked the photos. When you visit we will show you ALL of the 6000+ photos we took over the 9-weeks - AAARGH! At home now and will write to you in the next few days.
Late Edition Sitting at home in the UK where the temperature today is 4 degc, somewhat different to the 35+ degc we have been used to on our travels. Currently updating the Blog with the last few days of our time in Vietnam thanks to Sophie. The parents will be telling you of our adventures in Australia.
Apologies for this late edition of the Blog but comms really were somewhat limited in the places we visited in Western Australia. We really should have realised and we do want to complete the whole journey.
Well what beautiful views! Lunch of frogs or dogs? Frogs I think as long as they were cooked properly. You must be experts at eating with chopsticks by now, we shall have to have a Chinese takeaway when you come back to show off your skills - or on second thoughts you might prefer a MacDonalds happy meal!? There seems to be a lot of sitting on the floor to eat- lucky I am not there - I might get down. but not up again! You are really fortunate to see and experience how different people live and be the centre of attention. Just think of how many presentation you will have to do in school on your return - I bet they ask you to do an assembly!!!! Sorry shouldn't have said that!!! Enjoy your days and stay safe!
You are epic. That sounds awsome our half term isn't nearly so exiciting we've got our au pairs sister over from spain for the week so we have quite exiciting things planned. Nothing quite as exiciting as what your doing I expect.
Blame the Engineer You can blame the engineer in the family for the poor categorisation of domestic animal organs. Perhaps attendance
at an autopsy would help!?
BBQ Didn't cook anything over a fire, even the traditional Aussie BBQ was gas and as for open fires whilst camping in the wilds .... In fact we didn't cook any meals for the the first 6 weeks, which as you can imagine makes a pleasant change. However, it was good to get back to normality in Australia even if this was only 2 rings on a camping stove. Australia was far too expensive for us to eat out on a regular basis.
I thought KFC was standardised the world over It sounds a bit like the crown jewels queue. Like you Sophie I wanted to go back and have a better look at that. It sounds funny that he was shy and quick I wonder what he thinks of queues of people looking at him now!
I thought KFC and McDonalds was meant to be standardised the world over it sounds horrible. I hope you did not suffer the following day eating uncooked chicken
Dude, there is a McDonalds in Hanoi Square Unfortunately, the episode of Malcolm in the Middle, which tells us there is a McDonalds in Hanoi Square is incorrect. KFC, however, is everywhere and I think we just hit on a badly managed branch. We can recommend McD in Australia, it serves excellent boeuf.
View Point I can't get over how mountainous the country is. It looks really challenging.
You are certainly seeing how the other half eat. I found in Japan not to ask what the delicacy was in front of one. Close your eyes and go for it. I was interested in the "guts". If cooked properly they can be very tasty. We used to have them when I was growing up cos they were cheap, I suppose. Steak was never on the menu.
Whoops Was that the title of that photo!? So glad somebody is reading the small print. It should say "Returning from the Market".
These two, 80+ and 90+ had already walked 3-miles up hill from the market. Oh, and I'm not carrying the piece of furniture on my back either.
See you soon!
Wow you are prolific writers I can't keep up with you! So many updates - thank you so much for letting me share your journey in this way! I wonder will you remember to say 'hello' in all these different languages. You really have amazing experiences and are very brave eating all this strange food and brilliant travellers! I am not sure I would have liked the markets - I saw them when I was in Albania and it wasn't a great experience! It's the smell gets you hey!
Hanoi I have really enjoyed your photos and learnt a lot from them. Unfortunately not many people seem to travel to SE Asia perhaps because of its turbulent background, and we all miss out by not learning of its culture and history. Your trip has been an amazing experience. Johnny and Sophie must have learnt a lot more than could every be taught at School. How is their french? I have been trying to follow some of your journey via Google maps but they don't have enough detail and many of the towns just don't show up.
Happy Easter!! Happy Easter love ones! I hope you will find time to celebrate amongst your busy schedule! How exciting to see Ho Chi Minh - albeit as a corpse! In my student days he was popular with the German students I don't really know why! That was before the Vietnam war with the Americans! Anyway I am glad you are still enjoying yourselves and seeing really amazing sights - I have saved the family picture - it's brilliant. Keep up the good work of writing this journal! Sooooo interesting!
Your blog Love reading about all your adventures! You are having such an amazing time. Seeing you swinging around in the waterfalls was brilliant.
Sadly you've missed the coldest, most miserable winter in EG that we have ever known.........
We are Jonathan and Sophie aged 8 and 10. This is the story of our travels through Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Western Australia as we search for elegant elephants and mischievous monkeys.
We are only young travellers but are open to new experiences and sights
"I would like to eat something disgusting, like a spider" - Jonathan
"I would like to see lots of animals, besides the elephants and monkeys I hope
to see koalas, kangaroos, and whales in Australia" - Sophie
