Christmas was good. North Americans eat too much, we’re fat..felt good! That was our holidays! So, we have a place where we buy groceries. It’s called E-Mart, the equivalent to Walmart without the child labour. We buy groceries here and have had a heck of a time making it out of the store with bananas’. It seems that whenever we take the bananas to the checkout, the lady, who doesn’t speak a word of English, just takes the bananas, curses at us and places them below her till. This has happened three times. We thought that bananas were illegal in Korea for the longest time. Until now; Amy was determined, she found a random lady shopping and followed her like a stray cat until she found out the forbidden secret of banana-buying. It was soon ... read more

Ok, so I have been in Korea almost two week, it's now christmas, christmas day in fact, and I am writing my travel blog..... strange. My time in Korea is spent in various ways, firstly I teach, not exactly taxing only teaching 5-7 hours a day monday to friday, but the classes being in the evening prevents much being done afterwards. Seongnam, which is on the Seoul Subway line is the poor part of this 'satelite' city of Seoul. The small city is jam packed with retsaurants serving anything from fried seaweed, to Pizza and in some cases dog, apparently Seongnam has a famous dog meat market, a place I shall go when I need to cry. Secondly I spend alot of time reading, mostly sitting in coffee shops, not that I'm there for the fantastic ... read more

These past few weeks have been beyond crazy. With wrapping up school, making sure the Christmas Concert didn’t end up disastrous, and packing up our classrooms for supposed renovations over the holidays, are we ever glad we made it through alive. I decided to start this blog with a few stories... So as you know from previous blogs, the funniest things always happen on the subways, or at least at the stops. We’ve been stopped by countless JW Koreans trying to witness to us in broken English, had our pictures taken, and who can forget the never ending stare down. One Sunday we were taking the subway and this girl and guy get on. She keeps looking over at us like she wants to talk to us. Finally I guess she gets the courage up, walks ... read more

Day 1 and settling in OK, I arrived last night and spent some time with my boss and a man name Bista-moon (who also works at my language school), we spent time buying a few necessites, bedding etc. After than I headed to a restaurant, being a vegetarian Korean cuisine is baffled by my dietary requitement, but an assortment of side dishes seems to suffice, though it's not rare to find the odd octopus tenticle or piece of pork in anything. Despite the issues the food was good. After my trip of shopping visiting various shops, buying incredibly ugly bedding and a huge pack of toilet rool, among other boring items, I went to my apartment, it's small but cosy, the only issue seems to be that blankets are attached over the windows to stop the ... read more

The last couple weeks we’ve stayed away from North Korea, we’ve been able to stay healthy, but for some reason we still manage to keep life interesting (I think it’s probably because I’m married to Mike). A couple weekends ago this restaurant called “Kraze Burger” which is really pronounced Krajee with a French accent (who knew?) was having a 50% off deal. It was their birthday and we figured out from the sign that if we wore green that Friday we would get 50% off our meal. So, the entire teaching staff got all done up in lots of green and went after school at about 6. Well, first of all, we found out as soon as we got there, you didn’t actually have to dress in green because we were definitely the only ones to ... read more

Hello Again! School is getting busier this time of year as Report Cards are due this week and there are only 6 weeks left until our Christmas break. We are excited! The past couple weekends have been full of fun! I'm feeling better and we've been able to get out and explore Korea more! Last weekend our boss's son took the entire staff out for traditional Galbi (Korean BBQ) I think to smooth over a few of the bumps the staff have been encountering. The galbi was amazing but the night was far from over. As we're walking out the restaurant, there's a few quirky things in the foyer. One is a free coffee machine where you press a button, a cup comes out of the machine and a nice latte is poured for you. How ... read more

Normal for Amy So it’s been almost 3 weeks I think since our last post... our apologies. Life has taken an interesting turn in the past few weeks. So two weekends ago we did end up getting to Yongsan Market, which is supposedly the largest electronic market in Seoul (or the World!!). Why I did that to myself, I’m not sure. All I know is we took a bus first to Itaewon (the town where the US army base is) and walked around there first. We had a wonderful western meal at a place called Gecko’s. We walked the markets a bit and every second store had a guy outside trying to sell Mike a tailored suit. Some man even got Mike to follow him into his store which was down some stairs... it’s so weird ... read more

Hello again! We had today (Friday) and we have Monday off to make one amazing 4-day long weekend!!! It is wonderful to be celebrating Korean holidays, Canadian holidays and pro-D days. We have no big plans as school is getting a bit busier and it's nice to get ahead on the planning a bit. We are planning on heading out tomorrow though and possibly visiting a place called Yongsan - it's basically an electronic- lovers heaven with over 2000 stores within 10 city blocks of electronics... Those of you who know Mike are probably wondering why they heck I would ever let him even know about a place like that, let alone let him go there... all I can say is I have no control. And we may not have enough money to come home.... So ... read more

Hello All! I thought Mike didn't put enough pictures on our blog last time, and those are the most exciting to look at, so I thought I'd add some. Not much else is new here - we've had a pretty relaxing weekend. Last weekend when we got back home after our trip, we made a trip out to Dongdaemun. It's supposedly one of the biggest shopping markets in Seoul. It was amazing. We saw everything from soccer jerseys for $20, watches for $5, these corndog things coated with frenchfries, and like 4 different malls with at least 8 or 9 floors of crazy Korean fashion. It's definitely the cheap place to shop. Lots of knock off names and fake stuff. Also, we made a stop at Itaewon which is where the american naval base is stationed. ... read more

The trip to Jeju was so packed with entertaining events we had to break up the last couple posts. It was that good!! Amy left off by describing the encounter we had with the bidet. From that we ventured out form the hotel. The first day was somewhat disappointing in the sense that it rained for most the day so our sight-seeing was limited. We spent the day walking around watching caged seals flop about and smelling the "fresh" bottom feeders the local were selling. It wasnt till the next day that things picked up. The next day, although still raining, we decided to try a Korean submarine ride. This would not have passed ANY safety regulations in any other country but for some reason the Koreans decided to get together and build a steel barrel ... read more
