The motivation to blog has been non-existant. Things happen and I think, "oh, make sure and remember that...put that in the blog..." but to write a new blog meant I'd have to start with three weeks back. Pre-robbery. Instead I think I will just post random thoughts or events that have happened that I want to remember. FIRST: I've been meaning to mention this since the first day I stepped outside in Korea. The women's style...and men's too I guess, is ridiculous. Ridiculous in a good way I guess. This is not an overstatement: Everyday, everywhere I go I am underdressed. No matter what. If I go to work, if I go hiking, if I go wandering on a Saturday. The women/girls here are in heels, AT ALL TIMES. 4inch+ heels. I've never seen anything like ... read more

Our first Weekend! Friday So after our first full day of teaching on our own one of our coworkers took us out for a night to relax. After a $4 taxi ride we were part way across the city at a Korean barbeque, which is very popular, where we had samgyeopsal, similar to thick-cut bacon, but it’s actually pork belly. The traditional way to eat it is to barbeque it in small pieces, then place it on a lettuce leaf with some weird tasting soy bean and hot pepper paste and maybe a slice of radish. Then you wrap it all up and pop it in your mouth. I (Rachel) loved this! Scott just ate the meat off the grill and dipped it in sesame oil mixed with salt and sometimes pepper, which is also delicious. ... read more

Let me replay the last two weeks: After finishing my last blog, I went to sleep, woke up early, and ventured off to Seoul with Jake for the first time since training. After a really fun and busy weekend in Seoul (filled with lots of pictures) I was excited to edit pictures and blog about the weekend. So, on Tuesday night, when Jake went to play Wii, I stayed in and emptied both my cameras contents onto my computer. Wednesday morning, Jake notices 110,000 won is missing from his wallet ($100US). We try to figure out what he could have done with it in the 18 hours since he withdrew it from the bank. We could come up with nothing besides a student stole it, which didn't really make any sense. Then, he decided to go ... read more

What can you say about a thirteen-and-a-half hour flight? It was long, really, really long. Comfy but long. Our attempts to sleep failed. As we found out, sleeping upright is difficult and somewhat uncomfortable. In total I got around 2 hours and Rachel got a little more. It wasn't all bad though. We had televisions embedded in the seat in front of ours with many movies (lots of new ones), music and TV shows. The service on Korea Air was great. The stewardesses were very helpful. All in all though there isn't much to write about... we flew... from Canada to South Korea, that's it. Oh, it was raining when we arrived... The real fun began when we got to Incheon International. We arrived at 3:00 am local time, a little later than expected because ... read more

Apparently I am a few days behind in my blogging....Of course, Lacey reminded me so here I am trying to squeeze in a blog about last weekend with 54 minutes until this weekend begins. I will start with a few things that I have been forgetting to mention in previous blogs: First, I got my first haircut. It was necessary because my mullet was growing in a little too quickly. I went to a place within walking distance that everyone else in my group had already been to and they all highly recommended it. It was a pretty nice place, everyone dressed in white collared shirts with black vests over them and bow ties. There are boys that wash your hair and take you to your seat where the hair dresser cuts and styles. The wash ... read more

After 2 weeks of very sporadic weather (sweating in the heat walking to work one day and then freezing with a winter coat on the next) I think Cheongju has decided to let Summer begin. The last three days have been very warm and I know it's only going to get hotter. I won't complain yet because I know there will be plenty of that to come...ha ha. Last weekend, as soon as we were out of work on Friday, we decided to check out one of the local jimlilbangs. Before we checked in for the night we decided to grab some dinner at a place very close to where we all live that has been completely packed every time we walk by it. It's a rather small restaurant and the biggest table seats 4 so ... read more

This past weekend was rather low key in comparison with the one before but I still have a pretty cool story worth sharing. On Saturday I woke up and planned to have some alone time with coffee and a book on top of my roof. Then, 4 friends knocked on my door and said we were going to the beach. I was slightly confused because I couldn't think of any beaches anywhere near us. They didn't have many answers besides the fact that Jin (the Korean partner teacher to one of the guys in our group) and her friend were driving from Daejon to pick us up and drive us to the beach. We grabbed some Lotteria (korean fast food burgers) and headed to Dunkin Donuts to meet up with them. All of us were pretty ... read more

Preliminary Trip Info So... this is just to update those that don't know yet, or for those that care. Rachel and I will be teaching overseas in Korea for approximately one year. This will hopefully be followed up with some traveling. I'm mainly writing this entry to play around with the blog and different text settings. We will be living and teaching in Cheongju, the provincial capital of Chungcheongbuk-do, in the Republic of Korea. As of now we don't know exactly where we will be living, and I don't know whether I'll post that anyways since at the moment this is in the public forum. I will post our school address though. Where we are teaching: Wonderland School 2F 1754 Gakyung-dong Heungduk-gu Cheongju, 361-803 Chungcheongbuk-do Republic... read more

Nakedness, a 5 hour hike, spa's, cutting the tape, norebongs and the continual pursuit of Super Mario Brothers, provided me with a weekend a travel blogger could only dream about. (Save yourself by reading half of this at one sitting and then leaving a book mark... an epic weekend is anything but short) The weekend started with a visit to MJ's on Thursday night. The objective was clear: find out where the owner got Super Mario Brothers. We needed answers. What we ran into was a familiar nemesis. Go back to your blog memory of my travels and remember back to the time Bethany and I moved into our first way too small apartment. Remember the guy who was drunk, looking through my stuff, and talking to me WAY too close with breath that would ... read more

I have been trying to put off writing about this weekend because I knew it would take forever. But at the same, the longer I wait, the more I forget. And this was a weekend to remember! Friday night after work, none of us got to bed until about 3am. So 6am came quickly. When the alarm went off, I had no idea for a couple of minutes, why it was going off, what day it was, or what I was supposed to be doing. After realizing we were supposed to meet a bus load of people at the church in only an hour, I jumped out of bed. Everyone was a little slow at getting up so we were running late. We didn't know how easy it'd be to find taxis at 7am on a ... read more
