Leaving Korea-Part 1 (Jeremy writing) It has been an interesting few weeks to say the least, and there is much to chronicle. I will start by saying that we are making this post from Japan. Our teaching job in Korea became untenable, so we made the move to the place where we had originally intended to come. How we got here is a story in itself that will require several posts. So I will begin in the beginning: our gradual slide into extreme dislike for our job. (Jen writing) My slide was not gradual and it started long ago. Everything you could say about what you did not want in a manger, he epitomized. To be brief about my numerous annoyances, he was a habitual liar and only did things to the school’s detriment. (Jeremy again) ... read more

(Jen writing…) Well, it has been a very long time since we’ve been able to login and update this journal. I assure you it was not because we’re lacking stories to talk about. There have been a bunch of hysterical things that have happened to us over the last two months so we will try our best to recollect them now. The Beach: We have spent a good portion of our weekends at the beach since the weather has been so nice. This is a completely different experience from that which we were accustomed to. First of all, because I grew up in Florida right on the beach I have taken it for granted until now. I loved going to the beach because it was relaxing and peaceful. Here, it is almost completely opposite from that. ... read more

(Jen writing) Well as many of you have noticed (and commented on) we have not updated our journal in quite some time. The reason for this was actually not pure laziness. We have not been able to access the site from overseas for about a month and a half. We had to wait until I was in the U.S. in order to switch it over. The new site is http://jeren.blogspot.com/ We hope to be updating this one quite often. We hope everyone is doing well. We miss you all and hope to see you soon. School Life (Jen writing) Well, another week is almost done. I certainly have my days where teaching frustrates me, but I have to say I do like it more than I thought I would. The children here, for the most ... read more

(Jen writing) Well, I've had quite a bit of fun scaring innocent Korean people. I did it again at school last week. I was headed to class and my students will usually come get me if I'm not there exactly when class starts. I was at the head of the stairs and could hear them running to the stairwell to come down and get me. I stopped at the corner and jumped out toward them to find that it was one of the Korean teachers. I felt so bad that I had scared her! Once she realized what happened she started laughing really hard, but I still felt bad about it. I haven't been trying to scare anyone lately.... As we've mentioned time and time again, for whatever reason we are quite the novelty here. No ... read more

(Jeremy writing)-First, a quick story that relates to cultural observations. The people here, as mentioned, think we are quite the novelty. They openly stare and talk about us, although we have no idea what they are saying. I tend to think they are saying, "What a handsome couple. Perhaps they are movie stars shooting a new Hollywood film." At any rate, another thing they are always amazed by is our language. When people hear us before they see us they always kind of jump-as if our English is abrasive to their ears. So bearing that in mind, the story: We live in a tower that has four elevators. Sometimes, if two elevators arrive at the same time, Jen and I will hop on different ones and race. About a week ago, we began our race and ... read more

Alright, my turn. First, let me say that it finally happened. I was waiting for a bus and a high school kid approached me and said hello. I said hello back, and that is as far as it usually goes, but then he asked if he could take a picture with me. I laughed and nodded but had to ask why. He spewed some excuse about having homework requiring him to talk to a foreigner and needing photographic evidence, but I knew better-if you have the Loch Ness monster or an ET standing five feet away from you-you get out the camera. Plus it was digital so there is no suspense while waiting to see if it comes out blurry or not. Of course, this being a different culture and all, the taker of the picture ... read more

(Jen writing) This week really flew by. Now that I've gotten to know my students better and I have a better grasp of their abilities, time is flying by. I'm really enjoying teaching and I really like my kids. Now that we've had six weeks to get to know each other, classes are a lot more fun. When we have behavior problems, we're told to stick the children out in the hallway and have them stand up against the wall with their hands over their head. This is what all the Korean teachers do and it appears this and calling their parents is the only forms of punishment they use. Most of the boys, especially the older ones, find this form of punishment to be a joke. Luckily we don't have too many problems in class. ... read more

Website Well, I finally finished our website. This is where we'll be posting pictures. I hope you enjoy! http://www.jeren.worldbreak.com The Daily Rut Well, Jeremy is right. Our day to day lives aren't exactly the most exciting. I guess it all plays out the same every place in the world. My schedule is a bit more relaxed than his. I go into work every day at 12:45pm. First, I have my kindergarten class. Then I have a half an hour break and then from there on out it's all ages of elementary students until 7:30 with a one hour break somewhere in there. Except for on Wednesdays, where I have one class from 12:45 until 1:30 and then another one from 4 until 5pm. (Also, there are a ton of national holidays here. Jeremy has been here ... read more

Well, Jeremy has touched on most everything that's happened in our lives. The personal space thing is definitely taking some getting used to. Every where I go I get touched. Especially, at school. My kindergarten is out of control. They poke me everywhere and when I inquired about it to the staff, they told me that is a compliment and they like me. (Thanks for the help!) Teachers day was really nice. All the children's mothers brought in food and bought us presents. Some of them were rather generous, while others were interesting. Socks are a very popular choice. Jeremy received two lovely pairs of baby blue and gray print ones. He wears them nonstop. The flowers here are packaged very differently than in the U.S. Roses and carnations come armed with more taffeta and ruffles ... read more

So, the Japan trip. After almost missing my flight to Busan, I got a bit of paranoia in me and didn't sleep very well. I was awake well before the alarm went off and finally rolled out of bed at 4:45. I took a shower, put my bag over my shoulder, gave Jen a kiss, then headed out into the dark. There is nothing worse than getting up when it is still dark outside. I caught a cab to the Marriott, a bus to the airport, and a plane to Seoul. ALl pretty boring and standard stuff. I caught the plane to Japan, arrived in Osaka, and finally things started to get interesting. Coming off the plane, I hit a wall of easily 200 people all slowly trying to clear immigration. The line snaked its way ... read more
